I'm just wondering.... being a female and all, driving in a truck solo... am I supposed to know how to change fuel filters, replace the belts, crimp the wires, re-wire wires, , steel seals, oil the barrings, chuck the air hose and gladly hand over the grommets??

We picked up a Coleman at a TA stop last night and it works perfectly :biggrin_25519::biggrin_25519::biggrin_25519::biggrin_25519:

As for being a female trucker, do you own your truck? If so, do some research online and with other truck owners about your particular make and model of truck and follow a routine maintenance schedule. Routine maintenance is very important in trucks like these and can help prevent a lot of hassles down the road.

If it is NOT your truck, your company should have a schedule in place for maintenance.

No your not suppose to know how, some companies will not let you do minor repairs to their trucks. The previous poster had good sound advise. But if the company will here is how it was told to me "Do you want to sit beside the road for a few hours to get a fuel filter replaced by someone or learn how to do the 10 minute remove and replacement with new filter and be on your way. Oh add that it is hot/cold outside while you wait the few hours".
But if you don't know what you're doing never try and fix anything, you could make it worse. If the filter is not primed with fuel it will not start and the repair person now has more then a 10 minute filter replacement and will know you made his work harder. Knowing how to do the small/simple repairs may get you to a shop or keep you from waiting for hours in the hot/cold weather.

It all depends on, are you mechanically incline and what the company will allow the drivers do too. You don't have to know it all at one time learn a little here and there. But most important learn how to do it right.

Regarding the Porta-Potti (a must-have item in my book), unless you want your truck to smell like an outhouse, don't forget the holding-tank treatment. A gallon jug of Star-Brite pine-fresh will run about $20.

Trainer had a 12V cooking pot that worked great for him for quite awhile, he got it for around 20 dollars at one of the truck stops and mentioned he could only find them at truck stops. it was small, just enough for a can of soup or for making single meals. Didnt take all that long to boil water.
