    Slathered,

I'm going to drive for Werner after I get out of school b/c of their Apprenticeship program. I will be drawing my G.I. Bill money every month, on top of my flat rate (and eventually) my mileage pay.
Also, my brother has been driving OTR for almost 13 years, and he is going to start working for them about a month before I do, so he can go through their mentor/trainer course.
He's going to be my trainer, and afterwards we're going to drive as a team.

Do you think life at Werner will be better for me considering the above circumstances?

by leaps and bounds. the only thing you will have grief with is your dispatcher and the unrealistic time limits they put on you.

Most of the battle is already won with you teaming with your brother. you should do ok.

So their PLS (paperless logs system) doesn't prevent dispatchers from giving you unrealistic loads in terms of time? How do they get away with that considering that the PLS was designed to insure that drivers run legal?
I'm not doubting you; just posing the questions out of curiosity.

    Thanks for your help.

I only have had 1 run that i could say would have put me over on hrs.
Contacted my fleet manager and they took the run back for reavailuation.
The door lock situation has me wondering. If you lock the truck from the inside and pull the inside handle the door will open.
Also Allot of trucks have to be locked from the outside with the key when you leave the truck. tihs is supposed to prevent you from locking the keys in the truck.

No, they wont allow you to go over on your time. Yes, the paperless log prevents that. What happens is, they give you a 24 hour run that you really need 28 hrs to do. When you don't make it because big brother is watching, they chew you out and ask why you couldn't make the run on time.

I know how the truck locks work. I could hit the lock button on my way out of the truck and it would not lock correctly. I could juggle the handle on the outside and it would pop the lock. It would also do this with the Key. there was something wrong with the door mech.

Think about your statement. if I could only lock the doors from the outside, what are you supposed to do when you are inside and want to keep things out? Not only that, when we would stop in a fuel lane and pull up; we would lock the truck with the engine running holding the extra set while we went in. i'm not sure who told you about trucks only being able to lock on the outside with a key. but I think you were told incorrectly.

There are trucks that do lock like he says, from the outside. You can press down the lock on the inside and its locked and will stay that way until pull on the handle. If your outside and you press down the lock and then close the door it wont stay locked it will pop back up, so....you take your key and lock it. I think one of the reasons for this is so drivers would not lock their keys inside. Im not sure what your point is about locking the truck at a fuel lane and running inside.

    You missed the point entirely.
As I sit in my t600 kw right now as i type this. I push the lock button while I am inside. The doors lock. If someone tries to open from the outside the door wont open. But if I grab the inside door handle to check and see if the door is locked it will open.
    Are you following so far??
Now if I open the door and push the door lock(Drivers side) The lock is in the locked posision but when I close the door the lock unlocks itself.
You have to lock the door with the key when you are outside. This is so you dont lock your keys inside.
As for the not enough time to do a run. It doesnt happen with proper trip planning. If you can not complete the run in the amount of time specified call your dispatcher right away. This is the same practice with any company.
I have only had 1 run that I showed up to the con late (but really wasnt they have a time window unless it is a jit) It was my fault cut my break short had to shutdown for 2 hrs to get hrs back.

Yeah, it's all to keep you from locking the keys in the truck. I know that some VW's in the 90's used to do this too. I don't know if they do it now. We used to call it idiot proofing. Basically it all comes down to you can lock the door from the inside and noone can get in while you are in there, and you have to use the key to lock the door from the outside when you aren't in it.
