For I, Shakey AfterShock, have given this much thought, and have arrived at a definite possibility.
Are you trying to figure out logging from a book, or worksheet, or any other way other than practical application?
If so, and considering where you're living, the "SHOW ME" State, I'm thinkin' if you actually SAW live loggin', you'd see the light.
My advice?
When you first start driving a Big truck, always LOG LEGAL. Once you've gotten that down, you might consider the advanced version of logging, called, "Creative Logging -- 101 Special Applications Edition.
They also offer a course in Big truck truck drivin' Loggin' -- Complicated Edition For Dummies.
But that's written by politicians, and only they can seem to understand it. On the plus side though, it's written in several languages, ....... even English, I hear.
But I haven't been able to find one.

TRUST ME (Didn't your mom or dad warn you to stay away from the women who say "trust me") the attorney's can tear that log book apart and find you in the wrong (as I do to the drivers that "think" they have everything looking good) and then you sit in jail because you ran over a kid, mom, dad, judge etc and the log book proved you shouldn't have been there at that time.
Believe me it happens to the best of us, that's all I can say. You can think you are as sneaky as the bank robber that got by with it 10 times and on his 11th time he gets busted. It will happen when it's your turn and if it doesn't happen good for you, I will just be happy you didn't kill anyone or hurt any mother in the mean time. So please be carefull on how much you brag on "how good of a log fudger you are".
I had a driver last week claim to me he was so legal and he showed DOT receipts he didn't "have to" to prove this, unfortunately the "driver" was written up with a false log and after I looked at him, I noticed hmmm he has false logs, he "thought" he "made" it look legal, however it wasn't. I called him out on it and he is still in denial of me catching him. Hmmm???
Drivers I can only warn you, I can't stop you (right?)! Accidents happen and we don't plan them. I can drive in front of you and get hurt really bad and I sue you to find out (hopefully) you are over your HOS and you will be held at fault for that accident. You MUST understand when that accident happens and you may be innocent but if they dig deeper you could be found to be guilyt in the court of law. So please take my advice and log it legal as you do it! The biggest thing is not driving over your HOS and being in the location @ the time you was there and for the amount of time you was there. Logging line 4 for work, but not driving is a false log and DOT will violate you as such.
What do I have to gain from you doing what you should? I could lose my job if all of you do what you should. However if I could get you all to do it legal, it's worth me finding a new career! If you don't, I only lose the phone call of saying John was sentenced to 5 years in prison because he was over his HOS or falsified his log (which usually means you violated your 11,14 or 70 to have a false log) and falsified his logs. He will lose his licence's, he will not have a pay check for that 5 years, he will be out attorney fee's, he will have to deal with prison for 5 years and so on. So you take your choice in life as they say. I don't know you or anyone on this board, however I try to steer everyone on this board in the "right" direction to help you!

You should never learn creative writting. When you learn it's hard not to use it more than you should. One time of creative logging can cost you money and or if in an accident can cause you prison time.
Just research "Taylor University accident" and read the articles and see what every article discusses the "cause" of this accident.
Maybe he was just doing creative logging and didn't think he would ever get in an accident. It doesn't matter how many hours, the point is if found driving 15 minutes over your 11,14 or 70 you will be held accountable for that accident, unless you get lucky like "oj simpson"

When inquiring with any Big truck truckin' company, the most often asked questions go along the line of;
How much per mile?
How many miles?
Vacation pay?
Health Ins.?
Home time?
Chicken lights?
Chrome nudie girls with pert,.................. well, ....uhhh,... they're usually on the mudflaps, flappin'.
And maybe how all that's broken down before it breaks down. Bit I think an important question too often goes unasked. That being,........................
How much are you paying me to THINK?
Thinking IS part of the job. At least it SHOULD be.
ANY company not willing to allow YOU, the Big truck driver, to THINK,.....................

This is one of the main reasons I am going out on my own 100%. I want to log legal, but with the way this company dispatches, I would starve. Now, they are not implying me to run illegal, in fact, this is the first company that appears to really want you to run legal, HOWEVER, I cant come off of a 10 hour break, only to sit for 11 hours waiting for my pick up appointment 30 minutes away...THEN, expect to drive alert and refreshed for 11 hours...THAT is NOT safe. So, I am gonna get my own authority, and make my own decisions. #1 being LOG LEGAL. It can be done and you can be profitable running 100% legal. I have done it before and I will do it again. PERIOD, end of story.

But I think you're in for a rude awakening.
The success --- failure ratio for O/O's is rather unbalanced toward failure. I hope you have a good business plan before you take the plunge.

least 1-2 months worth of savings of your bills and expsenses in the bank. I say that
because many owners get in the situation where their truck is down for a month and
they are making no money, borrowing money to pay peter and so on. They get rolling again and
want to run illegal and do what they "have to do" to get the bills paid (Hey I am one to
understand being behind on bills). Well if you have an accident or get busted by DOT the fines
or prison time will take away from you getting caught up anyhow. So please when you do this
make sure you have money in the bank (don't discuss how much you have or don't have on the board)
to cover these situations or you will be one stressed out person and running illegal to make ends
meat. So please pretty please make sure you understand you can't run illegal NEVER!
I know you understand that now, however becoming and owner might make you do things you don't want to
do to save you from losing your truck etc.

After driving for 5 hours, then sleeping for 8 hours that's a total of 13 hours without a 10 hour break, and there's a 14 maximum hour work/drive combination.
After one hour driving, a 10 hour break would be necessary before a Big truck driver could drive again.
Under the OLD rules, a Big truck driver taking an 8 hour break after driving for 5 hours would have as many hours to drive after an 8 hour break as their recap would allow --- up to 10 hours driving. After 15 hours of driving/working, a Big truck driver would be required by Federal law to take an 8 hour break before driving a Big truck again.
