Talk to a good accountant familiar with the trucking industry on the "per diem credit" and I think that you'll find that it's NOT A POSITIVE thing for YOU. It greatly benefits THE COMPANY, but not you.
I don't know if Maverick forces you to participate in the per diem program or if it's optional. But, companies that force you to participate in the per diem program are not "pro driver" companies in my opinion. Pro driver companies want to do what's best for the drivers, and any company that forces a driver to participate in the per diem program are not allowing the driver to manage their own money.
Of course those who work for companies that force them into the per diem program or who voluntarily elect to participate in it will probably chime in here and talk about how great it is. But do your own research and talk with a knowledgeable accountant and you'll find out for yourself if it benefits you more or the company more.

Maverick gives you the option to opt. Out

PerDiem always benifits the Driver....it's tax free money (I did the research) and lowers your tax bracket. If it benifits the company too...win win! Now, what I won't do is take an advance on my gas card if I need money. Never mix personal money with company money. Get a miles credit card and pay it off in full (you do need to keep track of monies, be detailed and thrifty).

It benefits the driver ONLY if he files short form on his taxes. If you have several deductions you take each year its in your best interest to opt out and take the deduction when your taxes are done. Cpm per diem doesnt equal what the IRS allows for a per diem deduction unless you run a minimum of 500 paid miles EVERY DAY that you afe gone. Even then Im not sure.

Actually it DOES NOT "always benefit the driver", but it does always benefit the company.Glass Man said: ↑PerDiem always benifits the Driver....it's tax free money (I did the research) and lowers your tax bracket. Everyone's situation is different, so to say that it "always benefits the driver" is just plain incorrect.
For example, if you itemize, then the IRS allowed per diem allowance is almost always more than the CPM per diem paid by companies.
I'm not going to try to explain the idiosyncrasies of per diem here, I'd just recommend that anyone considering participating in such a program should consult an accountant familiar with our industry to see if it will benefit them or not. -
Maverick does not do per diem by the mile it gives you a IRS's maximum per day. Per diem is an individual choice.
It is not mandatory at maverick.
Companies that have mandatory per diem I would not work for. -
Do they pay you .4X CPM plus $47.20 per day if you do per diem?sewerman said: ↑Maverick does not do per diem by the mile it gives you a IRS's maximum per day. Per diem is an individual choice.
