What's the speed limit for a 26 straight truck in California ?

It depends, as I understand it, on how many axles you have on the ground. A two axle straight truck, with no trailer, should be legal for whatever the higher posted limit is be it 65 or whatever. A three axle straight truck is limited to 55 unless he lifts one of those axles off the road. It don't matter how long your truck is. Even cars pulling a little U-Haul trailer are limited to 55. Three axle Busses are exempt.

In the los angeles area seen a 3 axle tractor bobtailing in the # 2 lane of 4 lanes. Told him on the cb big ticket in that lane, replied it's legal to bobtail in that lane, call cal dot. I did and to my sunrise it is legal. But forgot to ask about speed limit

 

California likes to make things complicated.

 

Unless the bus is pulling a trailer, then it's 55.

 

SoCalBob usually when there 4 or more lanes in Calif. the right 2 are legal for T/T. If you look at the overpasses sometimes you'll see a sign that says trucks ok and this means its legal for T/T's to be there. EZ-VVV its any Commerical truck over 10k is limited to 55. In reality CHP tends to leave a truck alone at 60mph as long as they are not doing something stupid. I've seen CHP pass trucks doing 65 and do nothing in the rural areas of Cali,once again as long as they aren't dong anything stupid. This also comes down to the individual CHP officer as well. Most are ok,but you might get that is in a bad mood for whatever reason and decides to get picky.

 

Was told by chp at the cottonwood scales on I5 that bobtails can do 70 even with 3 axles.
