I see so many companies saying no NYC forced dispatch and others offering more money to go into the 5 boroughs and Long Island. I understand the low overpass problems and the restricted corridors that are out of bounds. Also I bet the tight turns with all the people parking too close to the corner has got to be something else that's problematic. But is it really that bad or are people exaggerating the circumstances?:biggrin_25524:

NYC and the problems you mentioned are real. There is often parking issues until you can get "situated" where you need to be. There are few "docks" and much loading is done at the curb, off of a freight elevator, time consuming. Then often you're ready to leave the city at 17:00 which is an exercise in extreme patience and frustration ... then the chances of finding any parking at any of the service areas on the Jersey turnpike or out at Bloomsbury after 17:00 are very slim.

I don't mind going in to unload so long as there is an IMMEDIATE plan of action upon emptying before ever going in. (preplan is a must) It's not a place for new drivers to "pay their dues" but sadly many new drivers end up there sooner rather than later because that's the way the ball bounces.

Traffic sucks and you have to be a little more careful in route planning, but I don't think it's nearly as bad as people say it is.

Used to do a four stop thing in Brooklyn, the Bronx and Long Island most Fridays. With the NYC pay it was great money and, since I started my day before traffic was bad, it wasn't any worse than any other stops I did. Finally went away when other drivers complained so much that we only send straight trucks there nowadays.

It also helps if you take a different mindset into the city.

I myself go from what could be described as even "over courteous" sometimes to just another NYC driver when I get there. Not that I'm a maniac, but you just have to take your space....make your moves....with a bit more, shall I say....determination!:biggrin_25523:

I backed a flat bed loaded with package cement into a Masonry supply place today in Melville while 2 guys stopped traffic.

Yes. NYC stinks. Traffic. And they all drive like lunatics.

I threw my iphone on the dash today to catch video footage of a box truck that was constantly back & forth between lanes almost causing several accidents.

    insane

Oh, did I mention that I don't get ANY extra pay to go there? Just one of those lovely perks of the job I've been complaining about. Oh, and "on call" again tomorrow.

Ok, I'll tell on myself here...
My 2nd time in NYC, I was coming back 495W and guess I missed exit 17W to come back to NJ...

I drive a tanker... can anyone guess what happens next?
