Hi, My husband wants to get trained into truck driving. What we want to know is what companies allow the wife to ride along? I am still trying to decide if I want to get my cdl as well but I am afraid I won't pass. How easy is it?

Any information will be greatly appreciated
    Thanks

Crete carrier is 1 of the best for rider policies. I do not know if they train though. I would suggest your husband tries to get training through a private company so he will not be an indentured servant to 1 particular company for a year or more.
As for you going through school I say go for it. It will take you some time and you will need to study during the schooling to pass the tests but you can do it. Just set your mind to it and you will be fine.
Us Xpress has a good team operation as does Interstate trucking. They both have decent team oriented equipment with lots of husband and wife teams. Perhaps teaming up with your husband would be a good idea.
As for training companies they are Scneider National, Swift, Covenant, and Us Xpress. Each of these companies has its own school but you do not have to go through them to get a job.

First of all, Welcome to the Forum!

There are plenty women truckers on the forum, and many more out there. We set our minds to getting our licence, and just got it done.
If you are hoping to do it only cos its easy or only cos you will pass for sure, then you are doing it for the wrong reasons...
Most things we achieve in life are just that... achievements. They werent handed to us, we had to work for them.
If you put your mind to it, you will pass for sure. It may take you longer or shorter than your neighbour to learn, oh well. We each learn at our own pace. I rode with another company driver for 8 months (2 days a week) before I finally got the guts to take my test. It was the most nerve racking day of my life, but boy am I glad I put myself through that cos I am loving driving every day.
Good luck with whatever you decide, and GO FOR IT!

Well, that's kind of a loaded question. Some people out here still haven't mastered the concept of walking and chewing gum yet, so how easy it will be is hard to guage. How bad do you want it? Why do you want it? And do you realy want it, or do you just want to be with your hubby, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Answer these questions for yourself, and you'll see for yourself how easy it can be. But, like another poster said, go into this for the wrong reasons, and it'll be he** like you can't imagine.
If you just wanna ride along with hubby, do that. Help him with reading the map, using the Qualcomm, trip-planning, etc. You'd be surprised at how much of a help it'll be just having you riding shotgun with him, sharing the road and the experiences.
But, if you wanna drive, really check it out and consider it thoroughly before you leap into it.
If you want it bad enough, it doesn't matter how easy or hard it is...you'll reach for it and make it, no matter what.

Hi, I'm not sure I would call it easy but I remember when I first started to drive that all I wanted to do was have 3 or 4 months pass by quickly so that I would feel comfortable behind the wheel...

Look if I can do it then you can and I will tell you why - I came to this country in 02 from NZ where we drive on the otherside of the road and on the other side of the car !!....So when I came here not only did I have to learn and sit my learners permit for my CDL I had to get my 4wheeler licence first before they would let me get my CDL Learners Permit.....so I had to do that all in the same day ~lol~ bare in mind that I had not done any driving in his country whatsoever - car or otherwise...Well as you can see I have my CDL so it means I passed....I had my ex-husband train me to drive a big truck, which can work for some people provided they get along and dont yell at each other when a misundertsanding happens....thats another story for another time...anyways you should go for it, it is fun and can be very rewarding. A warning though, once you start driving it gets in your blood and it is very hard to let go...~big smiles~

Men you gotta love em but sometimes you wanna strangle them....~rotflol~:biggrin_2559:

Hey TnT......I'm glad you found us and Welcome.

I think we can all agree that nothing in life is ever easy but with Inspiration and Motivation anything is possible. I think you’ll be fine and do wonderful.

I agree with the questions Mr. Bowles so finely stated. Ask and answer the questions based on your relationship, then pose the same questions to your husband. Your marriage is already a team effort so look from your front porch out together and decide how you can make that team stronger. Seems to make sense to me and I'm not even married.

Sidebar: My niece and her husband are new to this and boy she’s having a heck of a time.

I can only wish for the day, but if it were me I’d enjoy doing either. Teaming sounds awesome. I’ve always wanted to drive but would rather do so with my best friend and have the best of both worlds.

Not getting my CDL and just going along with my honey sometimes would be awesome too. I’m great at directions and route planning, can do any paperwork you teach me how to do, can carry on a great conversation and enjoy the silence and scenery just as well or agree to disagree if it happens. I could do the laundry while he caches up on some sleep or takes some personal time. Breakfast, lunch and dinner….gotcha covered there too and anything else that pops up and needs to be taken care of. Not much different than being at home except for home’s now on wheels and much smaller.

If you choose to stay home you’re going to need to stay focused and busy with your own thing or missing him is gonna bite ya hard. The first time he closes that door and you have to walk away your hearts gonna stop. This is the part I do know.

Whatever you choose to do together or apart just remind him how much he’s loved after all he is the one out their bustin his tail to provide for you and his family. He needs to know what he is doing is important. Go the extra mile to do the little things to remind him of that and always always keep the communication up and running any way you can. With the use of the Internet and cell phones there is no excuse. You can only get back what you give.

Good Luck to you TnT please keep us posted

p.s and I hope my niece is reading this also. :yes2557:

interstate has a school they will put you threw in new Mexico and they take the price of the school out of your pay check at 50 or 75 a week.once you stay with them for a year they start paying you back that money.I put my wife threw it and its working out fine with interstate.

My husband started driving long haul five months ago. After two months, I'd had enough. I absolutely HATED being home alone 24/7!! My kids are grown (just barely) so we made the decision that I'm going with him and I did - and love it :) I kinda think it's a hate/love thing myself. Either you love it or you can't stand it.

I've always been a homebody, loved my house, taking care of it (to a point), etc., and now I'm never there and weird thing is, I don't really miss it. I do sometimes, of course, but I'd much rather be with Mike 24/7 on the road than home alone miserable and bored! I like my alone time but not that much of it :)

Our little dog comes with us, too, and she's a bit of a nuisance but we're all adjusting and doing great! I'm MUCH happier than I was sitting home alone. I don't regret it for a second!!

Good luck and hope things work out for you :)
