Hi guys, my name is Gaston, i am about to buy a 06/07 Volvo. I was told by a friend(which has many years of experience) not to buy a Volvo if is not equipped with a Detroit. He says that the Volvo engines are not reliable AT ALL. The thing is all I am looking at (on those years) are equipped either with Volvo Engines or Cummins, which he also says are a piece of garbage. I was also told(by other person) that Detroit engines only got on Volvos until 2003, by the contrary my friend says that is not true, he says that there are but they are difficult to find(mostly in Miami, which is where I live), please i need a hand with theses, since it is my first buy and I don't wanna mess it up since the beginning. I have experience in the trucking area, but as a seasonal driver, i mostly drove Freightliners, and by the way I do OTR flatbed, thanks guys and all opinions will be tremendously appreciated, thanks, Gaston.

PS, ohhh I forget, are the Ishift, ultrashift, or automatic shift reliable?, thanks!

i drove an 06 volvo with the 475 hp cummins for a year and a half and had not a single mechanical problem out of the thing. im guessing that was about 150 to 160k miles.

Volvo engines are good except for the 16 litre, the 13 litre is a fine engine! I never owned one with egr but I had older ones, sold both mine at approx 1m kms and no trouble at all!

i have a 06 volvo with the d12 the only real down side to a volvo Engine is the only place you can get it worked on is volvo and you can plan on needing 1 egr valve (it has 2) at $1,500 a year.

we have 640k on ours and no real issue with it.... and run away from any 08 d13 dpf Engine. the company i worked for stopped getting volvo's because all 2500 08's had bad Engines... the 08 we had was fine for the first 120k then it was in the dealer every 20-25k for the next year

We have 1 '06 VNL780 and 3 '07 VNL780's. We bought them around the 380,000 mile mark and now have around 530,000 on them. All are with D12 Volvo engines and ultrashift trans. Only major mechanical issue was one of the '07's scattering it's trans just outside Phoenix.

The D12 is fairly gutless on hills (we run the 11 Western) and it seems once we crossed the 500,000 mile mark, we starting having lots of little issues; fan clutch, EGR cooler, 5 EGR valves so far, Transmission MCU wiring harness and XY shifter, A/C fan's, etc. It's like one of these a month per truck and at $1,000 to $3,000 per repair x 4 trucks, I can tell you more ways to cook Ramen noodles than a Chinese chef can.

If you're in FL with no smog concerns, take all the advice of getting a little older, more reliable truck. Less plastic and stuff to break. All the aero savings in the world on the fuel bill won't mean squat as you spend the savings on endless repairs.

Friend has a fleet of 25 Volvos. The '08's spit out injector cups like Fox Mulder eatin sunflower seeds. Stay away from the early D13's.

Since I get lots of time to chat with Volvo service writers, I can tell you their feedback has been great on the newer D13's.

As for Volvo being the only place to get them fixed. Not really the case unless its the engine. I got tired of waiting 3 days to have anything looked at by most Volvo dealers and starting hitting T/A's and other shops. Anybody can buy Volvo parts. The real problem is most Volvo dealers (hint: small network) don't have enough techs to keep the service bays moving.

They are plush inside though, I'll admit to that, but plush doesn't make you money.
