At 350K miles, I thought I would drain & change the oils in my gear boxes. Everything looked good, no chips, teeth pieces or chunks.

I remember the last time I had this done, it cost me like $350 with labor and all... Well let me tell you something, it cost me $405 for 5 gal of syn 50w, 5 gal of syn 75/90 & 2 gal of Lucas (for the rears). :biggrin_2555: My oil distributor guy told me that he was told that it was going up in June, something about the base stock costing more :biggrin_25510:

So.... you better get it done now if you need to change out your boxes before the price goes up.

BTW, the rears take just shy of 3.5 gals ea & the trans about 4 gals.

Have fun like I did.... :biggrin_25523:

Why would you need Lucas when running a synthetic? If you want thicker lube in the diffs then just run a mineral based lube and Lucas.

I really have no problem when you change the lube... to each his own. But Eaton recommends a 500,000 mile lube change when using synthetics. Oh well.

We do the same, 500K on synthetics. I about took a dump in my britches when I saw the invoice for a 55 gal drum of differential oil at almost $2000.

Wow man that is just crazy! Just curious, how does that compare to say 10 years ago when diesel was around a $1 a gallon, what would that 55 gallon drum have cost back then?

Couldn't tell ya, 10 years ago I'd only have been 12 years old. :biggrin_25514:

I've grown up in the family trucking business. Last year we got in a bind when our maintenance director quit so I had to jump out of the truck and run the shop till we hired a replacement and I got him trained and up to speed.

Wow, you're lucky to be in a situation like that. I can tell from your posts that you're taking full advantage of it and learning everything you can.

I am very lucky. Enjoying my last couple weeks of college up here at Marquette in Milwaukee before I graduate on the 20th. Going to go back OTR for a month or so before going inside the office. It's about time for my old man to retire :biggrin_2559: like that will ever happen.

I can't wait to get back there. 3rd generation company, should be fun for my brother cpape and I.

Your rears hold 3.5 gals... it was cheaper to buy the lucas @ $50 then it would be buying another 5 gal @ $158 + tax.

You change Dino oil @ 100,000... syn at whatever the mfg recommends... 250K to 500,000

    I run Meritor rears...

Linehaul, Every 500,000 miles (800 000 km), or every 4 years, whichever comes first

Intercity, Every 250,000 miles(400 000 km), or every 4 years,
    whichever comes first

Heavy Haul, Every 100,000 miles (160 000 km), or every 2 years,
    whichever comes first

I had 350K miles and its been over 5 yrs since it was changed... I actually wanted to check rears for broken teeth or excessive wear as I thought I was hearing some noise. Its better to catch a problem early.... and since the oil was darkish... its better to put fresh oil in rather then old.

I also replaced the suspension valve today and readjusted the height. my problem might have been the valve, but in any case... everything concerning the drive-line has been replaced or inspected. Trans and rears are still original. :biggrin_25522:
