    Hello all, 1st post.

Looking for advice on buying a 2008 780 with a D16(500hp) with DPF, I-Shift with 3.08 rears. The truck is a one owner unit and has 557,000 miles on it. The dealer has pulled the warranty information and it shows the engine has had the st/st injector cup upgrade. Also shows 2 new turbos, one early on and the second at 270,000 miles. One injector being replaced (#7)and the engine harness replaced. I am waiting for an ECM printout to confirm average mpg, idle time etc.. It looks like a clean truck and the price is very attractive.

My main concern is the D16. I've read horror stories about them but generally people post bad stuff on subjects and never really share the good. I also figure that if it is as bad as some make it out to be Volvo would not still be making it. I would really like to hear from current or former D16 owners on what they think.I know the I-Shift is a well respected unit so no real worries there.

This will be my first truck so don't want to make a $50,000 mistake.

    Thanks for the input.

My advice (you asked for it) is to not spend near that much money on your first truck. If you're just starting out, get a lower priced truck in order to keep your overhead low. Give yourself a chance to succeed and make it since you wouldn't be under all that debt and overhead. Once you get a few more $$ in the bank, upgrade if you wish. Give yourself a goal. Set a date when you want this to happen and work for it.
Regarding the truck, seems like a ton of cash for 560,000 miles. Since it has a D16, even more. Although Volvo has improved upon their engines, please remember that those trucks are proprietary, meaning only Volvo can do the real work on them.
Good luck and let us know what you decide!

Thanks for the reply. Financially I know what I am doing. Been planning to do this for a long time and have cash. I wanted input on the truck not on how to crunch numbers, balance the books and set goals.

With that said, I agree that the D16 would limit you to just Volvo service and so from that aspect it is a concern. Re the price, actually $50K is on the low side for 780s with a D16 currently listed for sale.

Our D16's aren't know for being fuelefficient.
But on a positive note.........i haven't heard off any having major engine problems so i won't classify then as bad engines.
    Offcourse ours (Europe) don't have EGR.(yet :biggrin_25510:)
For a first truck and you want to buy a Volvo,i would look for a D12 or D13.

If you do buy it,let us know what your findings are.

That's interesting, I did not know the Euro spec engines had no EGR, but you have DPF and DEF?

really there was calibration for Euro-5 w/o EGR. But EGR saves DEF.

Euro 5:All brands except MAN and Scania are DEF only.
    No DPF with DEF.
Man and Scania offered Euro 5 with DPF and EGR (without DEF)for a while but both have since stopped this.
So now all brands are DEF only.

Euro 6 (comes into force Januari 1 2014,i believe)
All brands will then be DEF+EGR+DPF............sounds familiar?

Sidenote:Iveco claim they will do Euro 6 without EGR.
We will see if they succeed.

Basicly EPA 10 and Euro 6 are very close to each other.

So i for one am very happy you are testing all those systems for us in the USA.:biggrin_25514::biggrin_25514::biggrin_25514:

really with DEF zero NOx, but EGR reduse NOx well, so with EGR less DEF is used. The problem is that EGR may let soot appear, so DPF required, else SCR converter will be clogged with soot. Yep E6 and EPA 2014 are the same..... ouh, easier to switch to electric motor
