Problem with bending that 102" whip is you lose it's radiation pattern. Secondly, you detune the antenna.

Newer ones must be different than the older units.Got both mine from my fother who had them on his truck back in the 70s. I have a swr meter in my thuck and the swr never changes from strait to the top pulled over to a point and tied down. When I get out of the city I just let them back loose. Only problem I have ever had is the base sometimes getting loose from the stress. Simple tightening and we are back in business.

You bend a 1/4 wave wip and the SWR will change ...

I think that he just doesn't have a clue on what he talking about.
Nothing that he has said makes any sense at all.
I think that he's really CJ reborn.

Instead of running your head about something you obviously havent tested for your self, go out and buy you a 102" whip and try it for your self. Why would the SWR change? Your not changing the length! Its the same length just bowed over NOT BENT! Now if you know anything about antenna and the construction of them like a J hook you would know that a J hook is a bent antenna or bent dipole. Just like a J hook and a Dipole they can be run vertical, in a V, inverted V or horizontal! Now you tell me why unless you have it laied down the side of your truck a 1/2 inch from the truck or touching the truck why it would up the SWR? Try reading a little and understanding alot! Downing someone doesnt make you look big or better. Makes you look lame especially when someone like me has to keep repeating them selves and pointing you in the right direction so you will understand. Before you start talking #### about someone make sure you know what your talking about. I do this thing called reading. Its worked out for me. You should try it yourselves.

I ran 102s on my pickups when I was younger and the SWR would always spike when tied.

I'm not sure what you mean by a J hook the only one I'm familiar with is a microwave antenna. As for a dipole a horz dipole has a impedance of 72 ohms but changes to 50 ohms when put in a "V".
As to why the impedance changes (SWR) is because the distribution impedance of the antenna changes. Put in a simple way the antenna is no longer balanced.

(kc0iv)Big_m Thanks this. -
Radiation pattern is not the same as SWR. And if nothing changes by bending it over, then there is another problem that is not apparent on sight. 'Tis the way 'tis!
Bruce (and others ARE correct). SWR CAN change when you STAND too close to an antenna or grab hold of it. Bending it over a vehicle places it closer to a metal "field" which changes things considerably...... among other causes. Don't believe it? Put one of those ridiculous "groundplane" thingys on your antenna, then check the SWR!
It will change things considerably, and you will have to re-tune the whip to account for the change.
