i think i burned my new cb

What kind of radio is it???? Did it pop the in line fuse??? Did you try another factory rated inline fuse????

What I am trying to get at is if it is a Cobra or Uniden then you more then likely smoked the circuit protection diode in it and it started popping the in line fuse. If you put a bigger fuse in it to keep from popping it then you may as well throw the radio away now.

 

Dont throw away the radio, a protection diode is EASY to fix

 

If he would have just stuck with the stock rated fuse then I say put in a new diode and he would be good to go. But going with the higher then factory rated fuse means that now something else if more then likely burned in it.

I learned this from experience back about 6 years ago.

But just for kicks, you can open up the radio and you might see the burnt diode. Cut the diode and see if it will power up and work. Off hand, I can't remember what position it is since it has been a few years since I had to put one in.

 

The bigger fuse wasn't the issue, crossing the wires was.

Was true until he installed the bigger fuse. At that point the now shorted protect diode either burned open allowing reverse power to many circuits or foil on the board burned open. Or one of the leads from the plug to the board. If the protect diode is now open then other parts could be bad. If you are lucky the audio IC was not cooked. However the 470 uF output capacitor is guaranteed leaky meaning if you fix the other issues and do not replace this capacitor odds are after a few hours the audio IC will be destroyed from offset current flow. Replace the diode, and in all cases where the diode opened replace the audio IC output capacitor. Never use a fuse larger than 5 amps for this model radio and if it ever blows stop right there and check the protect diode. A very small amount of simple common sense can save you a large amount of money in the long run. Also a good idea if the protect diode is open to replace the filter caps or possibly hours of operation later they can blow their little heads off in a typically loud way. Once the Aluminum oxide layer is de-polarized leakage in the cap can build pressure from heating dielectric.
