    Hi everyone,

I just got my class A in October from a community college while I was working for a plastics manufacturing company that I have been with for almost 5 years. At the time my company had 5 drivers hired. Three (one for each of the three shifts) worked as yard drivers, and 2 were dedicated drivers delivering product that we manufacture. Once they found out I had my CDL they started using me here and there to move trailers, or make an emergency shipment when needed. At first I was happy to be in a truck getting experience, but then they started pulling me off of my normal job almost every day to do something "truck" related. Naturally I started complaining, so they ended up putting me in warehouse as warehouse/CDL Tech on 1st shift. I was happy...a driving job straight out of school, being payed $13.50 an hour, home every day. I learned a lot in those 3 months. More than I ever learned in 3 months of school.

A few weeks ago they announced that they were getting out of the shipping business. An outside company took over our two dedicated runs so they had to get rid of 2 drivers. I was on the bottom of the totem pole, and got layed off this past Friday.

I knew I would get layed off 2 weeks ago so I've been looking for something local ever since. All I hear is "we're not hiring" or "you don't have enough experience".

I am so frustrated that I got off to a good start, and now I may end up having to go OTR which I really don't want to do. I'm worried that this may have well been one of the best driving jobs I will ever have.

OK, I vented, and I feel a little better now. If anyone has any advice on where to go from here it would be greatly appreciated.

If you live close to any LTL companies start putting applications in, it's coming into the busy season and you will earn a good living. Even if they tell you that you don't have enough experience, ask about going on the dock. That way you can get your foot in the door and work your way to the switcher or a driver position.

I've thought about that, but from what I understand they usually require alot of heavy lifting, and as I am a 135 lb female I imagine it would be rough.

well laid off is better then fired anyway unemployment will keep u in grits and hush puppies. and plenty of time to plan your next move
Not knowing your needs or family situation it is hard to advise but even if you do go OTR remember nothing is forever you went and got your cdl to better yourself
A lil prayer for guidance never hurt me
you sure are out in the middle of nowhere for finding work thou arent you
i love the middle of nowhere as long as i had a job

The thing about unemployment in NC is, that you have to put in 2-3 applications a week to stay eligible. So if it's the same way in GA, don't rush into applying somewhere you really don't want to work. If I were you I would apply to places you really want to work. It might take a little longer to get a job but hopefully one of those fish might bite. Then again I don't know what your financial situation is so, you have to take that in to account.

Unemployment here is the same, and I sure don't want to get stuck with a job I hate. As far as the financial situation I am the sole provider for 4, but I believe I can make it on unemployment. Still waiting on my pink slip to come in the mail before I can apply though.

I can get a bull **** job making minimum wage probably no problem, but I really want to be in a truck (just no OTR). Right now I'm hoping for a logging job maybe. I've been on the CB annoying drivers looking for stuff LOL

Don't know how you feel about relocating as you may find something in Savannah , Columbus , Albany or Warner Robbins .
I've been scanning the ads on C.L. for the last couple of months and have seen
co.s that WILL hire with 3 months experience.
( A Hazmat / Twic card will help a lot in Savannah . )There is at least 1 co. looking for someone just to pull trailers out of the ports .
You may also want to hit all the distributors ( beer , soda , chips ) around Macon that serve Warner Robbins as with summer about here most will put on more peeps even if its just for the summer , which would give you a few more months
    to put on a resume.
    Good luck !

Thanks for the tip. If I wasn't buying my house I wouldn't mind relocating. As for my last job, I drove an hour every day (one way), and I'm tired of it. Right now I'm going to try to find something close by, but if push comes to shove I have already thought of looking for something further away.

I may even change my mind about OTR. I will miss my children, but as far as the other drama in my life, I may not mind getting away so much.
