I have been a truck driver 34 years,, been on linehaul the past 16,,that's right, 8 hour shifts 4 or 5 nights a week. I don't do any extra miles. Reason being is there is no incentive. The guy loading my truck gets time and a half, a 50$% premium( overtime pay) on his pay after 44 hours in a week as does the guy at my destination,,,and so does the girl who serves the coffee at Tim's. If companies were serious about driver retention they would not compensate us like seasonal crop pickers. Is there anyone else who feels they deserve a premium for excess hours.. How about a 50% premium on your mileage rate after 44 hours in a week. That is the only incentive that will get an extra mile out of me. If the companies only excuse is the high cost,,just pass it along to the consumer. All the overtime benefits everyone else receives is compensated by the consumer.

this thread specific to Canadian drivers who are highway drivers paid by the mile

Hell yes I deserve overtime, and I get it. The way you guys get screwed paid by the mile is awful, should be illegal. Unfortunately as long as people keep taking the jobs they have no need to pay more.

Union in Toronto says workers get overtime after 46 hours.

Same union says drivers get overtime after 55 hours, since we don`t work as hard.

Not with that union no more.

You are working for the wrong person... :) ...

I am paid by the hour, overtime after 8hrs at 1.5, guaranteed 40hrs a week, 2x time on holidays (plus holiday pay so triple time for the first 8hrs then after 8 is double time), plus many other perks...

You need to find some company that will treat you fair... It stupid how you have to work say 60hrs and only get paid for 60hrs.. Rather then being paid over-time for excessive working hour which results in less family time.. So I think you should be compensated...

I think most jobs are required to pay after working 44hrs.. But trucking I think it's higher... I enjoy getting paid overtime daily.. Because getting paid overtime after working 44hrs sucks.. Cause what if your company says ok you work 10hrs for 4 days and work 4 hrs on day 5.. It's stupid..

Depends on how much a guy is being paid. OT can be used to save the employer money at the employees expense. You have to look at the whole picture.
