I work for a company who leases and rents trucks. The other day a retread blown on the semi in front of me on the highway interchange. I did not get a good look at the semi because it was already on the on ramp. The retread blew on this guy semi rear trailer tire and went across the front of my truck. My truck was in the lane nearest to interchange ramp. I thought at first the retread did not hit me because I did hear a thud. The driver never stopped his semi when the retread blew. I pulled over to the side of the road. There gashes / deep scrapes in the plastic grill on the semi on top left side. There no dents, holes or damage to bumper, mirrors, or light. Should I report to my company or will rental and leasing company take care of it. I hear bad stories about safety department always saying accident always driver fault no matter what. I never forget having a trainer while back who did not report cross member on trailer being bent on his landing gear during Laredo Texas yard trailer inspection when I worked for PAM.

All depends on just how noticable the "damage" is. If you suspect it will be noticed on the weekly (or whatever often) inspection done by the rental company when it reaches one of their facilities, and that same damge is not noted on the check-out inspection, someone may question it, then someone will want to know how it happened ... If the damage seems to verify your story, I don't see much of a downside to reporting it to appropriate person(s).

I would think your company would want you to report any and all damage that happened while you were in control of their equipment. It's not your equipment so therefore it's not your choice. It's called honesty & integrity, and apparently you lack both. If what you are saying is true, then I seriously doubt your company would have a issue with you, people run gators over, it happens.

You say you work for PAM? I can tell you this, if you don't report it and they find out, they will fire you. They are set in their ways on that.

report it. It will come back to bite you for not reporting an accident. the only question my company asks is following distance when it happend. Just be honest when reporting it.

How do you know it was a retread? Most blown tires are first runs.
