If you remove the drain plug and it has flakes of steel on it then I would be looking at the camshaft and rocker arms, for the problem. If you cut open the oil filter and find brass that can be from the Cam, or gear, bushings or the thrusts, on the gear train or crank. Aluminum is pistons, or bearing flaking off.
Just a thought! You do not want to buy a problem!

It's best to wait till your engine grenades and throws a rod through the block. Same goes for wheel bearings, if the wheels still roll, it aint broke and don't need fixin.
*do not attempt* -

Has it always had that problem? You may want to check the dipstick. We've had several that were wrong from the factory. We had a ruin of them that burned oil. They called for 40 qts. With 40 qts. the dipstick showed that it was a bout 1 1/2 gallons low. Once we stopped overfilling them, they stopped using oil. Cat told us to confirm that exactly 40 are put in, run it then shut it down and allow oil to drain back, then remark the dip sticks. They sent out a service letter on it shortly after. Those were before Acerts, so I'm guessing 2002-2003 or so.

Wow!!! At this moment i am in afghanastain. I will check when i get home in a couple months. I have a 2006 intl kcb c 13. My oil gets low after running 5k mi after oil change. Then its about 3-4 gallons before next oil change. I change my oil every 12k miles . After researching on here most say its the pistons. I dont know how much to change pistons, but some say its best to keep putting oil in. What is the going rate to change pistons?
