OK, I keep getting different answers on what needs to be done (not sure why I expect it to be different on the forum :biggrin_25525:) but have several trucks coming from different states for orientation.

They have no plates until they arrive for orientation so need to know what they will need to come here and be legal.

This is the first time I have done this and people have not purchased plates ahead of time.

    Thanks

Did they just purchase the trucks? They should have a temp plate if they did. Once they get to you they will purchase a plate from the state you are based out of.

Can they get "transfer" plates to move from their home state to your location?

I did this frequently when purchasing cars in OH and moving them to PA for plating and registration. But I'm not sure if the same can be done with Class 8 commercial vehicles.

No, they are all current O/O's that have had truck for more than 90-days. Various different scenarios but in the end, no plates, no tempo temp tag and need to move the trucks across several states.

And they will be plated when they arrive at orientation.

They need to get a hunter's permit from their home state. This came from a frame on the Georgia trucking portal, so easier to copy and paste:

It doesn't say it specifically, but I'd guess a GA operator could also get this over the counter at the DOR office in Hapeville. Best check the website to know what to bring in (proof of ownership, insurance, etc).

Edited to add: Might also look into fuel permits in the states you plan to drive thru if no IFTA account set up.

    BigBadBill and SHC Thank this.

These guys should check with their home state DMV. For necessary permits to move unlicensed class 8. Across state lines.

If they are buying the plates through you just get them a temp IRP from IL.

At one time I was told as long as you have bobtail and a cab card just put in transit not for hire on a piece of paper and stick it in the window but greedy as these ststes are now that might have changed

I thought the plates were in the drivers/owners name and you just added the new company you were leasing to the cab card/registration?
My friend used his same plate and he was with three companies one year.
