I am getting my own authority and am considering signing up with a dispatch service to help find loads and do paperwork. Any recommendations for a good dispatch service?

This is called leasing to someone. Why get authority and then pay someone to handle the most important aspect of you business?

80% of what and who is responsible for booking the load - driver or dispatch? The problem with dispatch doing it is they get their 20% of whatever rate and are likely more inclined to "keep a truck rolling" without regard to whether the owner is making any profit.

It all depends on the company you lease to. When you add in the other costs of being independent vs. leasing you are now in the 85-90% range (comparing additional costs of being independent).
But the biggest thing was what I was getting at. The most important part of growing your business for the long term is the relationship. You would be paying someone else to develop that relationship.fireba11 and rsconsulting Thank this. -
hi! My husband is going to open his own trucking company under his own authority. I will be doing all the office work. Right now he moves grain in ill. How can I learn all the paperwork, billing, misc tax forms, anything that has to do with the office work, dispatching, getting loads directly from the shipper? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

There are pro's and cons to leasing on or running your own authority. I have my own authority and am running loads for Buchanan Hauling & Rigging right now. It's true I could have just leased on and saved a lot of hassle, paperwork, and expense. However, I have a lot of options a lease driver doesn't have. For example, I may go back to TX this winter and haul drilling mud. I also have a friend who brokers loads and allows you to pull his conestoga trailers. To do business with him you must have your own authority and he pays a higher percentage than leasing because he doesn't want to deal with all the hassle and responsibility of leasing guys on or hiring drivers. Also, on any given day I may stumble upon that golden dedicated run or something and I'm ready.

Danny, what happenend to that new venture hauling mud in TX?

Rollin, while true, if they are getting a percentage, they may not care if the owner is making any profit, but how long will they have that particular owner? I would think, even using a dispatch service the owner would be looking at his profit margin and they would have to realize they aren't making any profit with that dispatch service, they would move on to another. It's in the dispatcher's own interest to ensure that any owner that they are dispatching for, is making a profit.
