Hi There! My husband is in the process of getting his CDL - he has passed the written and now needs to pass the driving. We live in OK and he wants to do hot shotting for oil fields. Any advice for a beginner? Today he just left to haul RVs for Star Fleet, and I am worried that may be a losing proposition. Any advice on how to get started hauling for the oil fields would be most appreciated! Thanks!

You're right being concerned about Star . Lack of backhauls cuts the mileage pay in half .
What does your husband have for a truck ? A CDL probably isn't necessary for oilfield hotshot . With a flatbed 1 ton a trailer often isn't needed .

Thanks, Rick. He has a Ford Dually - not sure about more than that- Ha! He would really like to haul in OK, TX, KS and to AL, if needed.

Check with Acme . If the truck isn't a flatbed it would be well worth having a flatbed . A lot of Acme loads don't require a trailer .

ACME has a fleet of over 2,000 trucks, and operates more than thirty service markets in seven states, 24 hours per day - 365 days each year. This diversity of locations and equipment ensures that ACME always has on hand the proper inventory of equipment to meet even the most complex customer need, and allows ACME to haul some 6,000 loads of oilfield and general commodities freight each week. Having full service ACME terminals in your locale guarantees that you receive the personal service and quick response you need and deserve.

Yup . Been there , done that . I hauled RV's back in '04-'05 but then a lot more loads were available from TX , MD , PA , OR , KY , and CA . Many of those RV plants closed permanently . RV transport companies don't pay adequate Fuel Surcharge and they only pay it on loaded miles.
Best to get out of it ASAP .
ACME doesn't have many return loads either but the rates are a lot higher .

Does ACME hire owner operators then for hot shot type stuff? What do they pay per mile? For acme, would it be best to have a 40ft trailer? Thanks so much for the info!

Here's their website . All trucks are O/O . The pay varies with the load . They can give more info on that . I'd say most loads can be hauled on trailers shorter than 40 ft . I have seen many ACME flatbeds hauling things like motors and other machinery that didn't require a trailer . Run a site search here on ACME .
