If you got experience local or OTR and a good record use this to your advantage. Remember that employers are also a customer who wants to buy your experence, treat them both ways and do not settle on thier terms only.
You got a skill that most people in the work force do not have! Remember that old line " We start all new drivers off at this rate, your not a new driver. Make them pay for your good record, there are thousand more trucking companies got can go to.:lichmalignus:

That is the way it should be, but not very many companies think that way.

Good, at least you didn't have to wast your time getting jerked around by them.

If a guy can't work with me before I'm an employe how's it going to be when I'm working for him?

I have had more than a couple of bosses that I asked AFTER I got hired what would have happened had I asked for more pay.

    Told the same thing.

They would have withdrawn the offer. If I am asking for more pay right out, how much am I going to demand when I am employed.

So it's a double edged sword there too.

Well if I was the employer I'd tell you that's what we pay, and if you sign on and don't like the pay check I'll understand and give you a great reference.

If they pay isn't what you want and they won't negotiate what's the point of working for them?

I've been through the same thing and I got turned down a lot, I finally found one I like. But I stuck to my guns. I think I went through 8 interviews before I found an outfit that would use their head.

This all sounds well and good, however, as an employer, I have no way of knowing if a new hire is any good until they have worked for me and proved it. A driver can have a good safety record and allot of experience but if they have a bad attitude, they are worthless to me. Resume's and interviews tell me next to nothing because they are full of BS. IF a prospective driver tried to negotiate a better pay schedule BEFORE being hired, I would be reluctant to hire them at all. Often the ones with the biggest opinion of them selves have the biggest attitude problem. Everyone should be paid what they are worth and some are worth more than others but that needs to be proven.

Why would you even apply at a company that isn't paying what you want to start with? That's just wasting everyones time.

Negotiating pay is common in the corporate world. In fact, most hiring managers expect it and may even look down on someone for not doing it.

Now I am talking about mid to upper level jobs. Someone just starting out doesn't do that or won't have any luck if they tried.

That said, if I had 10 years or more of experience and a great record as a driver I would negotiate with a smaller company since they might be more willing. Larger companies would most likely shut it down though I would think since they have newbies they can hire for less.
