I have the Rand Mcnally TND 510

    Cost is $300

    Works ok for me.

Any GPS you may consider, go to Amazon for prices. This is where I got mine.

Drive for 6 mo to a year and get GOOD with directions and names of highways, road and such before you even think about a GPS. It is a main part of your job if your not good at it you will never be good at your job.. You buy a GPS and it breaks a week later then what?? Just saying.....

Trust me, they all will steer you in the wrong direction eventually so your best bet is to get good with directions and using an atlas. The GPS can be a good tool to use but never rely on it.

I have a Rand McNally TND 510 and find that it SUCKS at directions. I use it for recording my mileages in each state and the points of interest. On occasion it comes up with the route I actually want to use so I follow it.

actually the Rand has a very good warranty, I know, I had to use it for the dc power cord going bad.

But yes, an actual truckers road atlas would be a good old stand by.

Yep, mine tells me the building I need is on the right.

    That is an empty lot!!!

    So yeah, it ain't perfect.

I switch from "car mode to truck mode", and very often at least for where I am going, they both match up pretty good.

Like the other posters have said, you really have to learn to reada map and follow dire tions. I often dind it useful to plug the address into google maps and then look at the satelilite viw.

You cannot hear this enough. A GPS will never make a trucker out of you. Do not rely on one. You will never develop your skills.

Once you get good at directions, reading a map, etc, a GPS can make things a little easier. They are not perfect and you need skills to be able to tell when they are wrong and how to get back on track.

    gps's are great...

good tip is: always use the gps in conjuction with road atlas and directions to compare. never as end all device..

just use as many resources you have to make your job as easy as possible.

i use the gps just to keep track of how many more miles left to the customer, i use the atlas or i just know which routes i want to take. as you get more time behind the wheel and travel you will get to know which would be the best routes to take, but always look at the atlas to double check to make sure.
