GPS For Trucks

I my opinion they are not! I use one I love mine too, but for trip planning in areas I don't know I always use my atlas. Where a GPS is better is in towns close to delivery's in places where street signs are either way to small or missing, because the street names show up on the GPS. GPS is always good for ETAs when your FM calls and asks.

 

I think GPS is for sure. Cant think of even one thing you can get with a paper map that a GPS doesnt have.

TRUCK GPS? Now that is just a rip off and actually harmful because so many rely on them exlusively and forgo calling for directions or asking other drivers about proper routes once you leave the interstate. People think because it say Truck GPS and they put in sizes and weights that the GPS is then infallible and even use it blindly.

GPS is GPS. It is a real time map. So just because it isn't on paper I dont think matters. I use a regular car GPS and have for years but I also know my way around the country and after locating a city can pretty much take the best route automatically. Truck GPS is like the CDL schools. They would have you beleive they are absolutely necessary even though we have done without forever.

 

It's on my list of items I will buy once I get in a truck and start driving. I'm a research and information junkie so rather than get opinions from people who may or may not have used a GPS in their trucking lives try this site:

I've spent several recent years as a Real Estate Broker showing houses throughout the Twin Cities Metro area. I've used a Garmin 770 (for cars) and can't imagine being without this technology. Is it perfect? No but it's close enough to be of value.

 

i use gps , routing from carrier an atlas because i can. My favorite is looking at google earth for what kinda place i am going to whether there might be parking etc
Of course it skeered mr a couple of weeks ago going into Carteret NJ seeing a loading dock that didn't look big enough for 53 foot trailers maybe i oughta quit lookin

 

When I drove truck didn't have GPS just maps/atlas. Now that I don't drive truck anymore I have one and can't figure out how I got along without it.

 

A lot of GPS bashers do not ever update their maps since when you first buy it the map data is outdated already. I pretty much hacked my GPS since I noticed it stores data in an xml format which is easy to edit. When I got my Garmin out of the box there were roads listed that were not shown on the GPS. After my updates and custom edits it shows everything and has never took me to the wrong place or to a low bridge and I have driven 38,000 miles with it already.

 

I love it when they say 'a GPS is already outdated when you buy it' as a reason to stick with the atlas. We know those never get out of date.

 

If you read the rest of my post you would see that I was stating a FACT and fully support using a GPS. The GPS map data is outdated, my point was to make sure to update your maps even when your GPS is new.

 

And my point was that atlas' are out of date when you buy them so anyone's who says atlas' are better because a gps may be outdated when new makes no sense. Wasn't directed at you.
