For years we used the engine as a hot plate..
Wrap a roast and some taters, onions and carrots in heavy foil, drive a few hundred miles or idle for a few hours and have a fine meal.

Realized new drivers may never know about doing this and be stuck eating inside if they dont have a microwave or apu.

I never had a problem with fumes or bad taste as one driver mentioned, some things go on the manifold, some on top of the engine. Temp control :D

I know of one lady trucker that made the best cornbread I have ever tasted in a foil covered cast iron skillet.

Weekends at a truck stop were a reason to celebrate as everyone ponied up something and we feasted like kings..

This in part helped us bond. Now everyone blacks out their windows and hides inside with a generator running and never come out.

Anybody got any stories or recipes??

Hauling water to the gas wells, we didnt always have a place to find grub so we would stick canned spaghetti-0's on the manifold and let them get warm, that was a nice 2$ dinner. If anyone wants to try heating up canned food in the can, it easiest to buy the pop top cans so you don't have to carry an opener.

I've done the canned food on the defroster vents just turning it every 5 mins or do to get an even warming, of I felt cOngident enough that I would enjoy the food I'd actually do the cooking ontop of the engine, nice and flat

Sorry, I just have one of those 12v cook stoves. Can cook just about anything in it and I don't have to open the hood.

Don't need to do it anymore..
    12 Volt everything :D

    We made coffee, cooked meals..

Couple hot dogs from the cooler wrapped in fdoil and laid on a straight pipe for a few minutes was eating big :D

My Dads 500 mile pot roast still makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

These days just take it from the freezer and microwave it, or cook it in a 12 volt crock pot..

Not saying those things are bad..just miss the comrades all gathered around swapping stories, working on whatever needed done, and the brotherhood of truckers.

These days it seems we barely acknowledge one another while walking thru the parking lot.

Just an old hand ramblin I guess..
Draw your curtains and carry on.

Have done the spaghetti-o's routine a couple of times. When I used to run to Alb. all the time I would do it, usually stop about Las Vegas, pop the can, cover with foil, place near the turbo, about 40 minutes later it was hot and ready to eat.

I've got a propane cook stove that is about the size of a shoebox. Small enough to fit in the side box. It's perfect for cooking a steak or burgers... I just pop it onto the catwalk, screw the small propane bottle onto the side, and in 20 minutes I've got hot grilled new york strip and an ear of corn waiting. It's good nutritious meals, and costs less than eating in the restaurants, not to mention it's healthier.

Hahaha, yea, my favorite are those drivers who place a can of something under the hood near the turbo to warm up and it explodes, making a mess everywhere. Yep, turbo cooking...hehehehe!
