Take a look at Mike's "thanks" That should tell you his tech is well worth shipping your radio to. Figure out how to do with out your radio for a few days and ship it. It will be the best $$ ever spent. I am lucky and live only 3 hours from Mike's tech, well worth every minute of the drive. There are several folks on here that know Mike's tech and some of his history and how great he is.
PM Mike and quit wasting time and $$ on those chop shops !!

That should be a warning sign when someone tells you that someone specializes in competition stuff. those guys like to spend 3000 bucks to talk 20 miles. A good tech will be able to set you up for talking and hearing 30 miles for less than 200 bucks. I made the mistake of having Raccoon set up a brand new Galaxy 99 back in 2005. it took .4uv to produce a barely audible tone in the receiver after he got done tuning it, and the audio was distorted after he got done surgically removing tr32. Jack at 292 radio shop in Holbrook Arizona fixed the damage Raccoon did, and retuned it. .2uv produced an audible tone after Jack got done with it, and the audio was much clearer. Then I bumped into Harddrive at Fine Tune cb Shop, and he retuned it, and after he got done, it only took .01uv of signal to produce an audible tone in the receiver, and the audio was even cleaner with no splatter whatsoever, and it talked to Harddrive from 65 miles away, and was capable of hearing him at that distance as well. It is ironic that tuned by Raccoon bird-watts were 60 peak, tuned by Jack bird-watts were 43 peak, and tuned by Harddrive bird watts were 38 peak, and with each change in technician, performance significantly increased with a decrease in output power. So don't let anyone tell you that 50 watts out of a 25 watt transistor is a good thing. I was a mud duck after leaving Raccoons shop.

rabbiporkchop, did Hard Drive tell you about my perfected Echip? I reverse engineered one the last time I saw a 2970 DX N2. Uses a 4069. Since I had one sitting broken on the shelf missing the Echip I was too lazy to look at it. Someone had stripped out a 2" square area in front of the pass regulator of all foil, surface mount parts and all. Anyway it was a hopeless too much time to bother with mess I figured was not worth blowing 50 bucks on for an Echip to convert and why bother trying to fix it if I could not use it from 21 to 32 MHZ. Being bored I built an Echip from my drawings. Only to find out trying it that the stupid Ranger was only giving it around 3.6 volts from the CPU for power. Remember the Echip has 3 wires, ground, +5, and signal. So of course the Echip I built refused to oscillate and produce a signal at a voltage that low and I had no mos versions of the 4069 laying around. Got to thinking an old LM3909 LED flasher IC will function down at 1.2 volts so I designed one using that IC. Two resistors, 3 capacitors, one LM3909. The criteria being the circuit had to produce the right wavetrain for the right time and shut down as long as it stayed powered, restarting every time you turn the radio back on. A one shot data burst so to speak. First time I turned on the 2970 it wakes up and said 'hey I'm a CB also now'. Works every time and under 10 bucks to build. If they still made the 3909 it would be under 2 bucks to build but those fleabay sellers want 8 for the IC from the lowest priced seller I found at the time. Oh well now I have the Echip but now I'm too lazy to bother fixing the radio. A hopeless mess of multiple density traces to follow trying to rebuild all the torn out circuitry. Some person in the Joplin to Springfield area had tried to repair it using what I think was a blow torch for soldering gear.

You think I should sell Echips for half the distributor price or what?

Not good enough for me. Once you get used to a noise floor that low, it is hard to go back to something 10 times noisier.

Would there be a market for them? I thought Ranger supplied one with their radios from the factory? You may sell some to people who buy their radios from a re-seller in Louisville who removes these from the box and sells them separate unless they pay extra for their so-called "Peak & Tune".
