This is strictly out of curiosity, but in the Intermodal world which is the better contender? Obviously J.B. Hunt holds the majority of the market, but I see these guys literally setting up shop across the street from one another, and I hear tons of great things about Schneider, but also see the nice trucks J.B. Hunt has....so I was wondering if anyone had any insight....is the big contender (J.B.) really doing something right? Or is pumpkin the way to go?

I would go pumpkin. I havent heard too many bad things about them. By me they averaged 55,000-75,00, had a 5000 dollar sign on bonus, work day generally 11-13 hours a day

JB Hunt is probly bigger but I heard a lot of driver say negative things. They were all local dedicated accounts saying they made no money either. Probly easier to get in with as well. Intermodel I dont no much about

Maybe someone else on here has other input but thats just what ive heard

Im an Ex JB Intermodal guy. Firstly everything bad you heard about Jb toss it out. JB is a great company but like any other company every office isnt great the local offices are awesome the dispatch for otr not so much and thats what you always hear about. JB Intermodal is local dispatch you can see your dispatcher everyday if you want to. I made ok but thats because i wasnt really willing to run hard to get 2300+ miles I averaged around 2100 but you can get more if you want. The pay is .43 i think. Most of the trucks are newer and work is always there because of the huge contract. The only problem i had was trains arriving and being unloaded late which was out of JB's control because we dont own the railway. I dont know about texas but the number 1 and 2 intermodal hubs are in PA and chicago alot of loads did come from the texas region so it may be really busy Id reccomend giving it a try if you think they suck jump ship to the pumpkin.

Hm...I'm actually an intermodal driver for Schneider now out of the Haslet, TX terminal. JB is right across the street (literally) and I see they have very nice equipment, I was mostly curious what people thought about the two in comparison. I have been with Schneider just over a month and LOVE them! The people are great and I get to see my dispatcher everyday. They never push and let me make my own decisions when it comes to getting the job done, they also always have miles when I want to run.

The one negative I can say is the equipment....my truck is older, was NOT well taken care of, and is nearing 600,000 miles. It took me several hours and countless paper towels to clean it out. We aren't allowed to have inverters, which isn't an end-all deal breaker, but certainly makes life more difficult out on the road. My pay is certainly not on the high end....even with a couple years of experience and working at least 5 12-15 hour days, I'm grossing about $750 a week... Not thinking of jumping ship (yet lol) but am always curious what's on the other side of the fence...literally.

I did JB intermodal out of Chicago from 4/08 to 10/11. I made 50k a year running Wisconsin and sometimes Iowa. Made about $200 a week in accessoral pay. (Drop/hook, live load or unload, detention) Great equipment and no touch freight. Drivers now run several (9?) states and all the accessoral pay has been eliminated. Too many live loads and a lot more driving to make the same money. About JB recruiters: they only get paid when you show up for orientation. They don't always tell the truth. I would still say you can make decent money with JB intermodal and they have great benefits. One of the safest companies on the road.

I was getting $20 to drop/hook at a customer, $30 to live load/unload. Detention started after 90 minutes. You had to call in after 1 hour to report a problem and then you were paid at the 90 minute mark. I think it was paid at $12 an hour. I was paid .365 a mile but we received the extra pay because we didn't run many miles, maybe 2200 a week. The extra pay brought me up to .54 cents a mile. Now you have to drive more with a lot more unpaid detention time.
