    Freightliner still makes them.

Navistar International still makes the 9800i, just not for the N. American market anymore. When I delivered sod in a 9800i, I could appreciate the shorter wheelbase when I delivered to residential neighborhoods, but it didn't make anything which would've been impossible in a conventional possible. Worst case scenario, I'd have just had to drive the Donkey lift a little further between the truck and the residence. I could understand if I were driving in Europe, but I see no real need for them in North America.

I'm surprised they're not used for city deliveries and straight trucks

Some companies still hang onto their older cabovers for city deliveries, but you can get daycab conventionals with short wheelbases. Also, when it comes to local driving (both with tractor-trailers and straight trucks) a lot of states base what your gross weight can be off of the wheelbase of the vehicle.. the shorter the wheelbase, the more you're penalized for weight. For example, I run a quarter frame end dump. I'm allowed to gross 80,000 on the interstate, but because of the wheelbase of the vehicle, I can gross 86,000 on secondary roads, whereas our Sterling pulling the same trailer can also gross 80k on the Interstate, but only 82 k on secondary roads.

System Transport still runs quite a few Freightliner cabovers on their pole haul division.

Looks like they're phasing them out little-by-little though.

I recall reading an article in a construction magazine a couple of years ago about a cabover volvo with horsepower rating up to 700. At the time it was only available in Europe.

Drove a K100 with a Cummins big cam, 13 speed and it was not a dog at all. Most people it is like a love or hate relationship, I loved that truck and it was set up nice.
