I think it's a great idea. Problem is APUs are expensive and since it's a lease truck I need to get Swift's permission to install an expensive piece of equipment that I have to leave on the truck should I decide not to buy it after the lease runs out.
I try very hard not to idle my truck. I refuse to let it idle for more than a minute or two without setting up the idle speed to 8-900 rpm. Problem with doing that is while it's much better for the engine it uses more fuel. My DD15 burns a solid gallon per hours at 8-900 rpm.Last edited: May 31, 2012

FWIW my DD15 is getting good mileage. I check the QualCom constantly and keep track of what I put in the tanks between fill ups. Over 2500 miles or so I saw 7.59 mpg under what I consider good conditions. That figure included 2 heavy (44,000 lb+) loads. Over another 2500 miles under less than ideal conditions (lots of wind) I got 6.9. Keep in mind this is with a nearly new truck and will improve with time and miles.

Bisqueak-im wondering how often do you do your B service? I just got my KW t660 bout a month ago and Im still learning with it. I did have a 780 volvo company truck so i am used to them. We had wanted a 780 but was told they stopped getting them due to some recalls on them. So Im not too familiar with the kenworths-so just curious how often you do your. Of course, Mine is ran team so Im aware that i will need to do them more often. Overall, I do love the kenworth but my only complaint with them is there is no storage space upfront like i had in volvo--i guess i got spoiled to all the storage from the volvo but I do have to say the beds in kenworth are much more confortable...

On long idle most newer trucks use about .5 gph. From what I understand, APU's use about .25 gph.
Considering the cost of an APU, I really don't think the cost can be justified that easily in a truck that may never even reach 525k before it is retired.
That is the 'company man' speaking within me.
Which is probably why Swift does not install them on company trucks.
They would rather use the fuel and rag on you about high idle times so you would try to use as little fuel as possible to their advantage, than spend the high costs of purchasing and maintaining an APU in the first place.
If I owned the truck and expected to run it a million miles or more, it would make sense to get one.
Well, if the APU would last that long without needing replacement or other expensive repairs.
And how many would want to make a bet on whether or not Swift has done extensive studies on the subject?
I idle as needed, and yet still seem to get the fuel mileage Swift wants - most of the time.
In any Volvo I have had, it is more difficult. But in the Cascadia and ProStar it was easy. -
The storage in the 2013 Volvo's are a thing of the past.
They replaced the cupboards with a single wrap-around open shelf. -
Awhile back Swift purchased a whole trailers of APU's. the only problem, the person purchasing them, well, he made a huge mistake. The ones that were delivered where APU's that are for RV's. Last that I heard, that trailer is still sitting in PHX, loaded.

I guess Swift doesn't know about E-Bay yet.
LOL!!! -
The complete PM schedule for your truck should be laid out in your contract, not just B service.

Update:
After a series of screwups I ended up taking a heavy T-called load from Phoenix to Las Vegas, 77,000 gross. Got my worse mileage to date, 6.2, good thing it was a short run. Still, considering the weight and route I'm happy with the way the truck is performing. Picking up a load of unknown weight (hate those) tomorrow morning in Henderson going to central WA-near Yakima. Will be my first time on running up US 93 in NV in a truck, been on it many times in the past.scottied67 Thanks this.
