Looking to purchase a 2012 Dodge 5500 for hotshot driving. Looking for someone that can give us a real idea of mpg while hauling and real experiences with this truck or a close year model... everyone we've talked to has a different opinion, but never owned one.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a guy who drives one I think. It's a POS from what I can tell. I believe he is about 6 mpg. He might have a 4500 though, ill ask him. Either way he is turning it in after having it less than a year and trying to get a used pete.

I've been running my 2011 5500 for a year and a half. Hauling mpgs, it depends on the load. I've had high profile loads on my 40' that weren't too heavy but got 5 mpg in hill country. And had 20K on the same trailer low profile and gotten 9-10. Nowdays I only run a 20' trailer and get around 11-13 loaded. Truck only, varies a little but around 14-15 consistently. For some reason when I'm near the ocean or gulf, I can get up to around 18.

What I can tell you is that it's a good, beefy truck and the heavy duty frame & rear end. It seems better suited to hauling than the little 3500s a lot of the guys around here run. Every one I have talked to has had to replace the rear end after doing about a year or two of hauling with the 3500s.

Haven't had too many problems, did have an axle seal and pinion seal that both blew, but Dodge replaced them warrantied (after my warranty was officially up) due to some manufacturing defect. Other than that which wasn't a big deal, great work truck.
