He said that the first time, he was in the truck and this last time he was in a truck stop. I have a lot of clients that are flatbedders and when I told them that I had the first set stolen they ask "how much do you trust your driver?' When I told them about the second time, they said "he is selling them" I have guys that haven't had anything stolen in 18 years.
Question regarding tarp thefts

I would suggest you track all of his expenses especially fuel. This does not smell right.

tell him to chain the tarps down and give him a lock that will fit over a snap binder and through the chain......He will have no excuses then!

I have. Been carrying tarps for 14yrs and never had a set stolen. Mine were in plain sight strapped to the deck with a 4 in. Strap I have parked and been in some bad areas never lost them. You might want to check his fuel milage start watching his credit card. Something don't sound right. By the way 750 depending on your location isn't great.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I am sure I will have other issues in the future so thanks in advance.

just a quick thought on you tarps. were the straps, i assume they were strapped, cut . did the driver tell you they were cut? and did you see them? reason being, i would think that some one going to steal a tarp would cut the straps to speed up the process. just wondering if it was mentioned in conversation. i have seen a bunch of company trucks back years ago going down the road with the tarps not tied down at all. even stopped and picked up a couple that had bounced off. maybe he is unlucky once and stupid the second time? not trying to say anything about your driver , but you never know. guy brought a trailer back to the shop one time , had one al wheel crushed, tire gone, two other tires , ruined. first question was what did you hit? no idea was the answer. hell , i had rather heard a fantastic lie about aliens and lesbians and a 69 camaro than beats me. johnny

Well, they say employee theft is worse than customer theft (shoplifting) in the business world. I'd say 2 sets "stolen" in 3 weeks is a big coincidence.

I've heard of things being stolen in south Texas. A friend that runs refer down near the border has had a tractor plate and trailer plate stolen on different occasions. What kind of truck stop was this driver at? Unless it happened at 2am chances are there are drivers that would notice someone walking across the parking lot carrying a tarp to another truck (unless it was parked beside). I think the vast majority of drivers are repectfull of other drivers' equipment and would never do anything like stealing a tarp or messing with your load as they wouldn't want that happening to them. I can't think of a more heavier item to try and rush off with than a tarp. Unless you really know the guy I'd say something is up considering this is back to back.

I'm pretty sure he is selling them, but then again maybe the guy is having some really bad luck, and you blaming him is just another addition to his bad luck. Why not just book him runs that require no tarps from this point on and the problem will be solved.

some drivers feel like if they dont steal something at least once a week they are not living rite. take home pay has nothing to do with it. excusses are like a--holes, you can always come up with one.
