Where I'm at (reddaway) I'm on call. Sometimes they call me and sometimes I have to call them. I'm in line haul. Bid runs come up in January at my yard. I have pretty much been working 3 trips one week and 2 trips the next week. Been fairly busy, just waiting to see what happens in the slow season. Keeping my fingers crossed. I'll probably still be on the extra board though, just don't want to get laid off. I can only imagine YRC does it similar. When I worked for Yellow years back, they did it the same way as I'm doing it now. Not sure about local. When at Yellow I had one month (if I remember right) to pay my initiation. They would extend it if you needed them to. It was one week salary then 54 bucks a month for union dues after that. I'm sure ACH1130 can answer you better since it has been a while for me and the union. Good luck with your new job.

I did the interview early this week so i'm not hired yet. It would be a blessing if I did get that call soon. The guy said that they were looking for Line Haul and City drivers. I prefer City because I have a family that I would love to be home for but if I have to do LineHaul then thats what i'll do. How long does it take before you can join the union?

I had to contact the union within 30 days I think. Then they let you make payments for your initiation which is one weeks pay at 40 hours. You will still have to pay the monthly dues on top of that. They wanted me in the union pretty quick. I think they had me pay my initiation within 8 weeks of being hired. Union dues were 54 a month back in 2007 when I was there. Maybe check the teamsters site or call them. They will let you know. The teamsters sure let me know when I couldn't pay the dues anymore cause I was only getting 1 day a month. I'm glad to see YRC is making a come back.

As a city driver it takes a 100 work days to get into the union. as a Road driver it takes 30 work days to get into the union. Why is that I dont know. Being on call for a Road driver is you wont have set hours, so basically they go by whos almost down with their ten hour rest. My friend says you can call a machine and it tells you how far down the list you are so you can prepare your day.

As a city driver I have a 8am start time for the shape up. The guy beneath me has to call in to see if he can get dock work or driving work. ABF is the same way from what Ive heard

Union dues Ive heard they were 48 dollar and Ive heard 52 dollars. I will find out more this week as Im not sworn in yet either

Yeah I take it you're getting paid more at your other job? The pay cut is not cool. 40 cpm is good if you're getting 3000 miles a week. Which I'm not. That is the starting pay at my yard with Reddaway. I think it tops out at 50 cpm after 3 years. I don't like waiting by the phone either to work. I do like the fact that I'm home a lot and my benefits are paid for.

    ACH1130,
YRC is 52 cpm to start now!? and tops at 60 cpm? Holy s... Reddaway started me at 39.99 cpm to be exact and tops out at I believe 52 cpm or 51.99 cpm! Hourly for us is 16 and some change an hour to start and I forget what it tops out at. Here I was thinking YRC took some huge pay cut. Seems I'm the one who isn't making any money. I wish YRC (Yellow/Roadway) were hiring in my neck of the woods.

Road and City jobs are available. I prefer City because I have a family but it sounds like there is more money to be made out there on the road. The guy that interviewed me did say that once you select road or city, you can't go back to the other for one year. That part sucks because I would've loved to try both to see what would be the best fit. Any recommendations on what I should do if i'm fortunate enough to get offered the job?

Here in Indy, you start @85% of $.61 mi. ($.51 mi.), & takes 3 years to max out. First 30 days are probationary til you receive (union) representation. So, be very careful those first 30 days.

Anyhoo, I got my first week under my belt, woohoo! ^5 Man, I am gonna LOVE this job. I was just a little nervous at first because YRC doesn't mess around (2 hour orientation & I was on the road, literally). I didn't even take any time off between jobs. One day I was working for FedEx, the next I was OTR with YRC Freight. lol However, I quickly learned how kind & helpful everyone is. Really blew me away. Made things very easy, which could have been a little stressful if everyone were A-Holes. Hey SkinnyTrucker, I was up in your neck of the woods yesterday (Chicago Railyard, Willow Springs).
Boy, I tell ya, I have learned a CRAPLOAD this 1st week. Will be nice when I finally go to a terminal I've been to before. lol Also, when I get 'put to bed', I have no problem crashing right out. I think the heavy concentration from all the quick learning makes me tired, but, it will get easier & easier once I really get the hang of things.
Man, I just KNEW this job would be a perfect fit for me. However, this job 'aint' for everyone, I'm sure.
