What is the average monthly payment for insurance & maintenance? I'm doing my homework on leasing a truck but before I do, I need you guys (the successful owner operators) to help me out. I have no rent to pay, no mortgage, no bills. I have a good income with no expenses, living out on the road and I want to put my money to work and make more money. I also want to pick my own loads and have control over when I want hometime. So what would be my monthly expense on insurance & maintenance?

And if there are any other expenses I need to take into account, your input is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It is hard to give you a number without the details like age of truck , how the truck has been maintained before you got it if it is not brand new. How many miles a week you will average. What you will be pulling and where you will be pulling . Where and how you buy your insurance will affect your cost your experience will affect your cost as will your travel lanes.

Thanks for your response. Will definitely keep what you said in mind.

If your experience information is accurate, I would recommend at least 2 years OTR before you make that kind of financial decision.

Just be aware there is going to be a few d-bags (I won't even need to post thier names) that are going to flame you and completely discourage you, don't pay any mind to them do what you want have a good plan in mind stick to it ..good luck and best wishes.
SheepDog Thanks this. -
There are also people who evidently think there is zero value in some experience before you buy your own rig.
If you "believe" you are ready then go for it. If you "know" you are ready just go for it and learn at your own expense as far as truck repairs, driving for fuel milage, paying all your own bills, life on the road, etc. If you are ready to buy into it long term after less than a year, more power to you. When you have a bad day or week as a company driver you have the option to walk away. Have fun when you still have payments every month. -
If he is leasing a truck and doesn't make it chances are he can quit and turn the truck in and not have the payments anymore depending on the lease.
EDIT: BTW it seems a lot of o/o set aside anywhere from $.08-$.10 per mile for maintenance fund (that's all miles to the truck, not just paid miles). The older the truck the more you set back. But if you are doing your own maintenance I hear $10k thrown around a lot as a minimum maintenance fund, some guys get uncomfortable if their fund drops below $20k. -
here's one break down for you. For a $25000 truck and $6000 trailer.

My experience is 1.5 years. I am considering waiting 2 yrs just like you said and keep learning about the industry. Thanks for your input.
