Please excuse this newbie's question.... Who is always sleeping in the top bunk? One of the team? a 3rd person in the truck? Is sleeping in the top bunk while the truck is moving illegal (lack of safety belt notwithstanding)?

Yes sleeping in the top bunk is illegal in a moving cmv. Supposed to hot bunk it and if you get in a wreck and that bunk cage ain't locked down they will hold you negligent and try to deny any injury claims.
They only put that top bunk up there so the trucking company's do not have to buy hotel rooms like they did when I teamed with a single bunk and had layovers more then 8hrs. In the year I ran teams the motel time was the only time I got any real sleep. The rest of the time was catnaps in those cabovers. Trucks are better but I bet there is still a bunch of half awake teams out there because I see them all the time slinging dust and gravel around off the shoulder because they can't stay in the lane due to fatigue. luckly not many Covenant trucks in my kneck of the woods.Rick_C and Simplemind Thank this. -
I wonder how many of the 20,000 unpaid miles were Out Of Route? Newb's tend to get lost and don't have the route planning skills down pat just yet.
-
The sleeper birth split was great because driving five on five in sleeper was a lot more conducive to catnapping then 10 on 10 off is.
-
I think it may be because of the routing system they use. They don't pay "actual" miles.

yes, I do! & yes I will! but, that will come after I go on to another company
-
if there is 3 on the truck the truck will almost always be moveing, and there is always gonna be a person sleeping on ther top bunk!
-
well since we use qual comm by company rules.... we should get paid for every single mile that qual comm puts us on! Period! and the only mileage we should NOT get paid for is going to truck stop to wait for new load! which is another joke! they leave drivers sitting for 30 or 40 ours then make them run 100 or so miles then cancel loads so they just have to pay mileage not local pay and screw them out of layover pay as well!

with covenant transport.. I believe its one of the worst (if not the worst) companies out there after getting out talking to my fellow drivers & past drivers. Covenant says they commit to care ITS A BOLD FACE LIE! I know for a fact, Ive been abused I been called a liar, and they have stollen my valuable time! they waist student time also... a student get on a truck just to haul lazy trainers up and down the interstate sleeping (Never backing a truck EVER) not getting any needed experience. and only passing the upgrade test cuz they are willing to pay the corrupted safety manager to sign off. they never even look at the student driver. just sign the paper so, when the student leaves in their truck they are set up to fail! while the trainer get $700.00- $1200.00 bonus. (What a gig!)

I guess my question should have been: who would the 3rd person normally be? A rider (spouse, friend) of one of the team? A driver hitching a ride to his truck (or trainer) at another truckstop or terminal? A lot lizard looking for greener pastures (I guess that would make her a "lot cow"....
)?
