When I key up, sometimes I have great power swing, and other times, not so great. This a random thing and happens at any time when I'm using the radio. What happens is that when working properly, I can dead key 2 watts, and swing the meter all the way to the right when I talk. When it flakes out, I get about a half watt dead key, and can only swing the meter about half way when talking. Even when doing the infamous "audio" call. I've changed mikes, coax, and antennas, and used different vehicles, but the results are the same. I'm guessing that there is something wrong internally, as I've made sure everything is tightly and properly connected.
Anyone have a clue?

sounds like your finals are failing I had a Yaesu years ago with a 2sc1307 final that would do that ...
Does it do it when it gets hot ? You might check the finals for a bad solder joint too no harm in doing that first. -
Yea, it sounds like its heating and expanding and cooling and contracting. At one of those points, it seems to be breaking a solid connection.
-
Numerous things it could be. Since you have replaced everything external we will assume that's all ok.
In light of that, it could very well be a solder issue
Could be the screws that secure the main board to the chassis could be slightly loose causing a ground failure
Could be (not knowing the inside of your radio) limiters removed and/or applying direct voltage to the finals can make the radio intermittent over time. I've seen where radios on that chassis that have had these things done will react oddly to mediocre grounding and swr.mike5511 Thanks this. -
Is your tb on? If so can you hear the difference? It may just be the meter going out, mines doing the same..
-
Huge difference. When the meter is swinging the way it's supposed to, I get feedback, when it isn't, I don't. I've also had fellow drivers tell me that they can hear the radio "cut out" when I'm talking. I originally thought it was my microphone, but that's not it. Then i thought maybe my coax was pinched. That's not it either.
Can anyone recommend a good shop close to where I live (halfway between Allentown and Wilkes Barre PA)? I really don't want to package the thing up and send it out for repairs. -
Well, I "might" have found the problem. Some of the screws on the shell of the radio were loose. I tightened each and every one of them as well as the antenna receptacle, and it "seems" to be working better at the moment. I'll find out later when I drive the vehicle.

Didnt some of the General Lee radios have problems with bad soldering from the factory a while back?
-
I had that problem with a Galaxy DX-99. It had a lose ring around the mike plug.

All Galaxy type radios have soldering problems...........Chinese no solder good!!!!
