I'm currently working on my AZ in Canada and am planning my future career. My grandfather drove for 40 years and owned his own truck for 20. I was wanting to do long haul and my girlfriend said she wanted to come with me. If I buy my own truck(nothing over the top but a 30,000 truck) would the company b e able to say I could not bring her. Also is it even possible to be successful o/o right out of school? All advice will be appreciated.

What's AZ?Get a good yr in before even considering becoming an O/O.Chances of you actually succeeding with out any knowledge of the details of an owner operator I would say are slim.

An AZ is the equivilant to a CDL in the states. And my worries are finding a company that would allow me to bring my wife with me right out of the gate or at all? And if I had to go o/o i have a grandfather with years of o/o experience to get me kick started. Or is it even realistic?

Best thing you can do is get some experiance in a company truck. But there have been the exceptions to the rule and went owner operator from the get go and have been succesfull.

I would definitely not have a problem using a company truck but if you own your own truck they cant say anything about bringing your wife right?
-
But they WILL NOT LIKELY HIRE YOU with ZERO EXPERIENCE - any way you slice it...
None of the majors will hire you as a leased on O/O without a year OTR.
You CAN go your own authority - but if you know ZERO about the industry, about regulatory requirements and compliance - and MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL - about who to RUN A BUSINESS - - then just "buying a $30K truck, with the most IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION is "bringing your wife along for the ride", is probably NOT THE RIGHT WAY to get into this business with any hope of being successful...

Incorrect, as the truck is leased and control has been transfered to the leased carrier, their policy applies. Many do have a rider policy, but some do not allow any passengers. It is up to each individual company.rsconsulting Thanks this.

Thanks for all the useful advice guys. So its possible for me to find a job , do the 6 weeks training ( team if necessary ) , and get a otr in a company truck that will allow me to bring my wife if they have the proper rider policy?
-
Yes, if your driving record is clean and your back ground is clean. But just keep in mind that because a company will train you and give you a set of keys to a truck and turn you out on your own, that depending on the company you may not be able to take a rider along for six months to a year. It all depends on their insurance and company policy.

Thanks a lot guy, you have been a lot of help, see you on the road someday!
