You have to show something in writing they are engaged in a commercial operation. Just being a truck doesn't necessarily mean they will be used to make money. One could go buy ten trucks to use as RV's. How will you determine their use? A commercial registration would be a dead giveaway.
But the truck as freight thing I was referring to a an interpretation where you cross state lines to go to a shop. Really nothing different. That's where the trucks are headed in reality is the companies shop for further in processing.
I'm just throwing my opinion. But I'm listening to you!
If it was me, sooner or later you have to get your ducks in a row. I would be the sooner type.

Maybe I'll just bite the bullet and send out a couple of our low boys and load them up to come home. They are mid roofs at 130" tall, If I drop all of the air out of cab and suspension I think I can get two of them on the deck to a legal 13'6" tall on my trailers.

These are not taxicabs, there is no such thing as "in service" or "not in service". When they are in operation under their own power, they are being "used in commerce".CondoCruiser Thanks this. -
I bought my truck out of state. It was not licensed but with a temporary tag. It was not a commercial vehicle until the lease was drawn up and agreed by both parties.
The definition clearly states what it is to be classed as.
IFTA has no bearing until it is used. -

IF, I could haul a load with them I would stack three of my lowboys together and pull them out with my S/A Pete, then I could undeck the trailers and take two of the Cascadias and hook up to the other two lowboys.
I could then load two Cascadias on each lowboy, plus the two Cascadias that I am towing with and I could move 8 of them at one shot. BUT I don't think I can legally HAUL anything OR for that matter pull a trailer IF the tractor is NOT REGISTERED?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? -
Insure them, keep a copy of bill of sale in each truck and drive them back to your yard to put them in service. Never had a problem
