just remember....if you have a spread axle trailer....you can scale 40k over that spread, so you are always better off keeping things a little to the rear.

 

Just don't forget that you can be over axle but still under 40K.

Just because you can go up to 40 on the spread does not mean you should. It is much harder on tires. Also most step deck tires are smaller (not able to stand up to as much) as your drive tires. It is the safe bet if you have to err on the side of caution. I just advocate balancing the weight when possible. Taking this approach you should rarely run over 36K back there.

 

I agree with cpape on not placing all you can on the trailer, once you learn your trailer balance of weight you will be able to balance the weight across the axle range. Placing the weight on the rear makes it drag rather than pull, those rear tires take a beating on spreads and the less drag the better tire life, less heat buildup.
