To tell you a background of my situation; I am 24 been laid off for 2 months. Ineligible for unemployment and can't get a job. Decided on trucking and did several days of research on where to go to get my cdl. Millis was the place that seemed the best for me. I applied to attend Millis Training Institute in Trenton, OH. Unfortunately my application was denied.

So the question is which company sponsored training offers good training and treats drivers well. I have a good driving record and no criminal background. My employment background is sketchy. Several jobs on and off. Which company would be okay with that and still offer good training?

Con-way Freight has locations across the county and they train their own drivers. LTL Feight is the best place to be. I have done it all and LTL allows you to have a family and be home everyday, so you don't lose them. I am a driver for them and I love it, oh ya the pay, well let me say that I haven't seen less than 60K for several years. I see 1st year guys over 50K.

Hey blueblood thanks for the heads up on Con-way. Were they CFI at one point? They have several terminals which is nice. One of their terminals is in Columbus, OH which is near me. I will check them out.
    Thanks again

that's sounds like a good company. I'm personally thinking of getting my permit by studying the manual by myself taking the test. What would the step be after that? To rent a semi with a cdl licensed person and take the road text?

Why was your application denied if you have a good mvr and no criminal past? Are you talking about the credit application?

It can be tough getting an unsecured loan for $6000! I personally would rather do company schooling. I would rather be on the hook with some trucking company for 6G's instead of a bank or financial institution. What's the worst that can happen going that route? Plus you are guaranteed a job as long as you finish school! No brainer there!

There are many companies out there that offer programs like this. It is a really good opportunity to get into the industry and make some good money without putting forth or risking any of your money.

Take the time to do your research. Make a list of your wants and needs and start combing the internet for the companies that best match those. Once you have narrowed your choices down to a couple dozen or so then you can start calling recruiters to get the fine details.

My wife and I drove for Central and had a very good experience with them. I highly recommend them for the one reason that they will do anything in their power to help their drivers succeed! They helped us personally on many occasions and one time actually got us a very large settlement from Volvo due to the truck being a lemon. Central is just large enough to keep you busy but small enough to still treat their drivers like human beings instead of numbers. There driver to dispatcher ratio is very good and that is one of most important factors in making money.

This is just my personal preference. There are many other good companies out there waiting for you to discover.

    Good luck...

I can't find info on training on their site. I see they have a location in my city, but still, nothing about training and can't find training info anywhere. Are you talking about, you show up with a CDL in hand and they train, or is this a schooling, get cdl, then go to work for them gig???

He said he was declined because of employment history. I was just declined for the same reason. However I was a contractor (1099) and the companies I worked for treated you well for the first month, then the honey moon was over. So I went through quite a bit of Sh%t after that. They known in this economy they can jerk you around quite a bit. Anyway I'm looking for a new career and I always thought I'd be a good OTR driver. But the recruiter I spoke with today said I was declined due to work history. It's really frustrating, I've all but given up on my current career path due to the lack of a stable job, now it seems I can't get a sponsored training position driving truck. I'm going to contact a recruiter supervisor on Monday to see if they can help in any way.

I have been pounding the pavement for 3 months now, almost ready to give up. I went out and got my class A on my own after having my class B for the last 6 yrs. Everyone said otr jobs r a dime a dozen, yeah right! EVERYONE requires school, i dont have that luxury. And all these companies that say hiring inexperienced drivers give you the run around. And as far as the really low predator companies like cr england, yeah right i would not even refer them to my worst enemy. Are there any companies that hire with very light experience and no school?
