While i understand that people don't want to put money into something you aren't using, there is something not so good with working this way.
Anybody who knows rubber will tell you that fresh rubbered tyres are very soft and thus will wear more quickly.
What i would do is run a set, recap them and put them in a dry dark place.
Leave them there and run on a new set off tyres.
When the 2° set in finished, take the recaps out off storage and run those.
While i'm on my first set off recaps, have the second set recapped and put in storage,etc..........
Think long term.
Added advantage off working this way is that you allways have tyres at hand in case you need them unexpectedly.HA-MTR Thanks this. -
If you check out the trucker magazine that has the guy with the wrestling belt on the cover, there is an article in it about recaps. With good casings and better manufacturing techniques and quality control, recaps are a good value. Proper maintenance and care will ensure good service. The article states that the gator tails you see on the road with the steel cord attached came from virgin tires. I will definitely the auto-balancers and pressure equalization system on my truck once I take delivery of it. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

Is this the article?HA-MTR Thanks this. -
Yup, that's it.

Whoever is pulling a spread-axle trailer with recaps, how fast are they scrubbing off the tread on the front axle in your specific application, and what tread/casing are you using?
-
I have used my own casings and had Goodyear cap them. They have a cap specifically designed for spread axles. The tires are LP 24.5. I don't recall the amount of miles that I have gotten on them as I have not been pulling that trailer much in a while. As I recall the tires have held up well. They have a one piece cap that goes on the casing like a giant rubber band. I have had a couple of tires that blew, but for the most part they seem to have held up nicely. Goodyear told me that I could recap the same casing a couple of times before retiring the tires. That can be a significant savings over buying new. I can't tell any difference in wear on caps than new. -
I've been using Bandags on my spread for years. They have a very rounded shoulder, just for spreads.
