I was at the T/A in Greencastle, PA last night and a guy was asking on the cb where he could buy some beer. But then again, maybe his delivery wasn't until Monday and he wanted to knock down a few cold ones.
Broker just quoted me $1.115 / mile

The shippers/receivers also know this and their terms are" this all we are going to pay"....

My answer to that is that it won't go on my truck at that rate. They can find some other sucker to pay them to haul their freight. I make a point of not taking a load into a bad area unless I can get a rate where I can afford to deadhead out to a better area. Hauling for fuel money has never made sense to me. I have known some owner operators who will haul for fuel to defer the cost to get out of a bad area. Unless owners refuse to haul for those rates things will never get better. When I refuse a cheap load it may never make a difference, but I know that I am not one of the reasons freight rates are so cheap in some areas. I am in this business to make money. I can't make money hauling for fuel money.HDFatboy and rsconsulting Thank this. -
I'm taking a few days off. But couldn't but help to call on a couple loads anyway, rates today seem a little low.
The question I ask myself is: if your're taking off why look at a load board? Maybe it's the over the road crack for O/O's -
must be, I look at the free sites to see what rates are and I don't have a sled to put the goods in!!.

Just keep in mind when you go to area's that are hard to get a good load out of to charge accordingly to take that load,, then when you can't find a good load out ,, take what they have and you'll be ok.
Example.... take a load that will pay you to deadhead out of low pay scale area's back to a good lane,, then when you can't get a good load or even can't get any loads,, you'll still be ok.
Say NO to cheap freightG/MAN Thanks this. -
I have not done business with that company, but I would not want to go to New Jersey for that rate. New Jersey is sort of hit and miss for me. I have gotten good paying loads out, but most of the time I will deadhead over into Pennsylvania to find a decent rate. When I look at rates I check on the other end. If I know in advance that I will need to deadhead out then I will take that into consideration when I make the decision as to whether to take a load or not. It will also dictate the rate that I charge.
