Hi all I live in Pittsburgh pa and want to get a cdl. I have researched the industry and feel it will be a good fit. I went to Allstate career for a tour and they are trying to sell a 6 month 10,000 dollar class. They say if I take a class I can start local right out of school. As we all know any local job would be low paying for someone like me right out of school and that is if I can even get the job. They have a 1 month program 4 6000 dollars but if I take that class I will have to go over the road. this seems like a total ripoff. If anybody has information on cdl training schools in Pittsburgh I would appreciate the info. If not please call matt on allstate career and if it sounds like a rip off. thanks for all the replies and hope to hear from people soon

That seems extremely high $$ check with your local colleges as they usually have programs for around $2000
and last any where from 6-8 weeks. You could go out of state for allot less than 10k. I am starting National Training Inc. in Jacksonville next week the total cost for their program was $5000 you do most of the class work at home on your computer (33 lessons at your own pace) then go to their training grounds for 3 weeks of driving and should leave with your CDL if all goes as planned. From what I've read people travel from all over the country to attend this school. Check out their website as they have Webinars you can sign up for that explains the school in detail.
Good Luck! -
$10,000 REALLY !!!
-
That is really high, They said you can start a job local, they didn't say you would go right into driving when you went local, they would put you on humping freight and running around the dock and you may not get in truck for 6 months, that is what they are saying is local. Be careful with that outragious expense and then look around there has to be better. Take Care.

$10,000 to drive a garbage truck?
I believe I would shop some more. They are only marked up about 300%. -
Yea. Sooo. Uhhh. Wow. Yea I would say that's a rip off. As far as I know most local jobs require 1-3 yrs OTR experience not a 6 month $10,000 School. Look into community collages I'm doing a full time mon-fri 380hr class for around $1,100. There are a lot of "schools" out there that will take your money and leave you for the wolves. Do some research and your best bet is a community collage

Have you tried Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics? They have a CDL training program.http://pia.edu/commercial-drivers-license.html
-
thanks everyone for all the information. I am going to
visit PIA tomorrow and contact the other schools today. this forum has been a great help and 1 big thing I've learned is not to rush into this decision. It seems like the pittsburgh area only has a few choices. how important is the ptdi certification 2 companies? would it be worth me spending 6000 dollars for the 1 month training at allstate? the 10,000 dollar 6 month program is all of you we are out of the question but if the certification is important to companies I might be able to swing the 6000 dollars for the 1 month program. again thanks for all the information -
$10 thousand and 6 months of training....RIGHT?!, i can go to a local community college, pay not quite $3,900 for 4 weeks and have my CDL in that time. I'm not going to shell out 10 grand and sit around a training school for 6 months when i can get my CDL, start working and get paid within 6 weeks.
