Why do you slow down approaching a scale?

Wrong, those signs were up before prepass, the sign that means something is follow you inside cab light, except for permitted loads.

Admittedly, I stopped reading past page 4 as the posts were becomming rediculous. To answer the original question....drivers slow down to the posted speed limit, then as they approach the scale (1/4 mile or so) they begin slowing more if it's open and they're required to go in. Those that slow more than that or farther back than that are just causing fluster clucks for the rest of us. Especially on the weigh in motion scales....they falsely believe going slower gives a more accurate reading, it does not. Watch those that slow below the speed limit get pulled in all the time while the rest of us with our cruise set on the speed limit roll on by giving them the number "one" sign for backing up traffic!

Someone posted earlier that they need to slow down to weigh in motion in Washington state. That is total bull dung! I ran the NW for many years with the cruise set on 60 and the only time I get called in is when the dip poo in front of me suddenly drops 20mph without warning and causes everyone to follow too close.

I use to run through at 60 also. It has been in just the last two years that I've had to slow down. My last student went to the Richfield scales on a class trip and the DOT officers told them the same thing.

We're not slowing down for the in motion scales, we see 20 of you behind us so we slow down so you'll blaze on by and fill up the ramp. Then while your dealing with the scales I drive on by, free from the harassment.

I pull in to closed scales and wait for them to open, that's how much of a rebel I am.

I think the bigger question is why would you pass when a scale house is coming up? My goodness some of these guys ain't too bright.

I am on my best behavior near the coops. I also don't pick fights with Dot cops when I'm standing at their counter. Lol if I had a nickel for every guy I've heard arguing with a cop and a ticket book. I could retire. even funnier, I've never seen a driver win. But many will tell you they did...

I slow down for one main reason. I have PrePass. If I don't have a large enough of a gap between myself and the trailer in front of me, it will fail. I've had other drivers cut me off and put their trailer by my nose.

I find it simpler to slow down by a few mph and leave a little more gap in front of my tractor. Normally, there isn't anyone near me at all, but it's always more congested near busy on/off ramps and open scales.
