Your job would not be protected. Take too much time off and you'll be "laid off" due to lack of business. There are a million loopholes businesses can use these days.
But, as long you're in good standing with your company don't sweat it. Worst case is like they said...get issued a new truck if you're out too long.

Not if you go through the official process for requesting FMLA. There is a specific notification process and specific paperwork to be filled out. Once that is complete you are protected. However, just verbally getting the "OK" for FMLA offers no protection.DirtyBob Thanks this.

Good thread. I never thought of this situation.
I found the answer on the FMLA website.

So? Does that mean you can only be there for the birth? Then extended leave to take care of the sick wife? -
I've dealt with this issue a few times. The father can take the full time allowed under FMLA (12 weeks). His spouse does not need to be incapacitated to qualify. The birth of the child is the qualifying event.CondoCruiser Thanks this.

I did that at my old job. There were talks about punishing me for putting in for 12 weeks. The day I came back I gave my notice so I never did find out if they were going to follow thru on that threat.

Wow...FMLA! I definitely will have to look into that! I wouldn't need 12 weeks unless there would be some unexpected complication *crossing fingers that isn't the case* I would like to start a leave right around the time of the due date. I don't wanna get a call that the kid is on the way and I'm in North Carolina and have to get back home to Pittsburgh. I want to be here so my wife isn't alone. Especially since this is our first baby.
I'll definitely be looking into FMLA. I didn't even know that such a thing like this for dads existed!
Thank you to everyone who replied here! You guys are all awesome!!
Thank You!! -
Hey steve, mind I ask who you drive for? I live handy to pittsburgh, just curious is all.

Make sure your start the FMLA process now. Most times I have dealt with this it can take a bit of time to process. Most companies of any decent size will have an FMLA coordinator that can walk you through the process. Don't waiting until the baby is born to start the process.SteveB Thanks this. -
FMLA is a great thing to read up on. Most employers don't do much towards telling you about other than the poster they put up about it they usually have in a break room or such. Read one of those bored in a break room when I was 18 and has been helpful a couple times.

Looks like I got a lot of reading to do. I would have waited to get this rolling to because I figured now would be to soon. This upcoming weekend I'm going to get started on this stuff. Thank you again to everybody for all the help and information!
