I'll share my setup that makes me happy.

Galaxy DX 979. The blue lights for the meter and channel selecting are cool and the green backlit control lettering is a must-have for night time driving.

I had my radio tuned, so it sends a cleaner signal and definitely listens nicely, too.

I'm using a pair of Firestik II antennae. The 4' with tunable tips.

I'm not saying my setup is the best, but I know I'm very happy with it.

I also own a pair of Cobra LTD 29 radios that I like.

I would recommend a Cobra night watch or the Galaxy I have.

You can also get a good price on ebay for customized radios. I bought my DX979 refurbished on Ebay for $110, rather than buying a brand new one for $180

It will work. All CBs work. Some just better than others. I have never used one like that but I am satisfied I wouldn't be happy with it in a truck environment.

It would work better hooked to a 102" steel whip than the most expensive CB or Export Radio hooked to 18" mag mount from Wal-Mart!!!

You can start and finish with this radio. It's not the cheapest but it is best in class.

I like the look too! I don't need another radio right now, but I would trust your advice and try this one if I did.

hey driver-just listen out for the driver that is selling one.make sure he is talking on it,go talk on it yourself, get a radio check, and if it sounds like sheeeit, you will hear just that.save your money and buy used and possibly help the driver out that is selling it.win/win for all. i haven't bought a new radio in decades but then i have quite a few just collecting dust.you can tell immediately if you are interested in it before you go look at it.

IT IS all about the antenna,a well tuned radio helps as well, but the antenna makes or breaks your set up.FRANCIS antennas are very low swr from the factory, zero tuning involved as long as you use 18' feet of BRAND NEW coax, brand new mount located in a desirable spot (as in excellent grounding),and a good noise cancelling mic.single antennas are simple and quick to set up.

Good point. I forgot to mention I have a road king trucker series noise canceling microphone as well. Priceless.

I've only bought 2 new radios in the last 35 years! Too many bargains out there!

I would not run a handheld CB. They really don't have any range. If price is a concern get a Uniden, Cobra, or Galaxy.

Assuming I want to get whatever unit I choose installed by someone that know more than I do (which isn't much) Can anyone recommend a shop in northern IL? I am near Exit 90 on I-80.
