Hey guys, quick question.... Is there any tricks for shifting the higher range gears coming out of 5hi or 6hi into 6lo or 7lo? My downshifts and shifting through lower range has been great but going from 5hi to 6 lo has been dreadful. I hit the splitter valve back to low and then start my clutching to neutral and to the next low gear and I keep miss timing it. I'm thinking maybe I should wait til it's in neutral before hittin the splitter back to low since I think I'm releasing the gas early and it is causing the Rpms to drop out of sync... Guys at my job all float and so I'm getting no help... Yea I use the clutch... #### me.

It sounds like you are trying to move the button back and move the stick at the same time. Once you go into 5th over, you can immediately put the button back. Nothing will happen until you break torque (releasing throttle, pushing the clutch, or both). This will set you up for the shift to 6th direct.
You can shift 5 direct->6 direct->7direct->8 direct->8 over if load and terrain allows you. IE: Not using the splitter until you reach top gear. The splitter is overrated. Your are driving a glorified 9 speed.
Run your tach to 1500rpm, which is about 300-500 higher than your low range. Go even higher going uphill.Last edited: Jun 26, 2012

if your not pulling a REAL heavy load drive llike and 9 speed and use 13th as an overdrive
you shouldnt have to hit every gear

That would be my only reason to have a 13 speed is that extra gear between the two top gears.

Well I haul gas and usually weighs around 78k.... And I was using the splitter before I started my shift but I guess it's gonna take time... And maybe if it's fairly flat I'll just not use it till the last gear or so.

you will be ok doing as we all have said, the extra gears are for off road and real heavy pulling.

Yeah Pardner, try shifting WITHOUT splitting the gears, like a normal 10 speed. Either up shift or down shift. Then when you get some confidence and a few miles under your belt, shift it as a 13 should be shifted.
