So for those experienced persons on here, what school would you recommend in the Dallas area? I'm looking at a career change and have been talking to a variety of truckers this week. I had more than one say to try Stevens since they offer the paid training (supposedly). However, I've also been reading a lot of negative things about Stevens on here as well.
Here is what I would be looking for:
Someone who will foot the bill for the school, I don't have thousands of dollars to pay to get my CDL.
It doesn't HAVE to be in the Dallas area, but it would be preferred since that's where I live.
Someone who will get me a job after getting my CDL to where I can support my family. I had planned on going to one of Stevens' little seminars this week, but I'm not so sure now.
The guys that I talked to said that they average around $50-$60K a year and that's about what I would need if I made the switch.

I went to the north Texas Institute for career development at goodwill industries. They offer a fully paid scholarship if you qualify financially. I graduated in one month got my cdl and now I work for Schneider national. I only just started my shooting back in April and I am already employed. Message me and I can give you all the info//contact numbers. The school is in Fort Worth.

Has anyone gone through the Garland ATDS class? If so, how was the experience? Is it a CDL mill?

Anyone that puts down the FFE Driver Academy either doesn't know wth they are talking about or was kicked out. They take their training very seriously and have alot to teach in a very short period of time (2 weeks). I researched them all before settling on FFE and I'm glad I chose to go with them. They will look out for you while you are training and after you start your new career. I just finished up my academy training and am preparing to go on the road this week. They will not hand you a diploma or a CDL just because you show up. You will have to do your part and you will be successful. Everyone at the Academy is experienced and the trainers are passionate about what they do. Not to mention you get paid 0.29 a mile for the first 6 months then 0.30 a mile for the next 6 then after a year 0.40 a mile.
Wingnut1 Thanks this. -

ditto on that ffe --- the school is great and they follow you all the way through the training process and after that too--- sure they make money on school but the main purpose is to train drivers for them--- about 50% dont make it out of the school so they have standards --
