What is the most important piece of advice you would give?

Oh don't forget Never ever lease a truck. Especially at Trans Am. lol

 

Always save something out of every pay check. Having a set amount or percentage will result in your building a good nest egg in no time. Most new drivers seem to want to own their own truck. Don't get in too much of a hurry. Give yourself time to learn this business first. If you start saving in the beginning, you will have enough to buy a truck at some point and do it right. You could also use your money to invest for your future or buy a house. Stay away from the lease purchase programs at these carriers. Some make money but most make less than a company driver. You can do much better by discipling yourself and save money until you have a good down payment and some operating expenses. You can wait a little longer and have enough to pay cash for an older truck. Leases can cost you as much as $800/week or perhaps more. You can buy a truck with a month payment less than a weekly lease payment. People come to this business for a variety of reasons. Once you complete your schooling the real learning starts. There is always something new to learn or experience. If you see another driver who may need help with something, such as backing into a hole or sliding their tandems, offer to help. You never know when you could be that driver. There was a time when we all used to pitch in and help our fellow drivers. It was more like a fraternity. Too many today spend time on their cell phones or computers rather than having a good conversation one on one with another driver. You never know what you can learn and it is much better to talk face to face than text. I have met some good people over the years. I have stayed in touch with a few. I have a couple of good friends and usually speak with both daily.

You never know whom you may meet out here. This industry has a very wide range of individuals from high school drop outs to Ph D's. The guy sitting by himself reading a book who looks like a bum, may have been a college professor in a previous life. You will find others who are taking classes online and working toward their degree. Trucking, for some, is something to do until their "real career" picks up. You will find many who have done this for decades. Some enjoy the lifestyle and would not want to do anything else. Others find it boring (I can't imagine) and can't wait to get out of the business. A positive attitude will go far. This is an industry where you can start as a company driver and buy a truck to build your own fleet or trucking company or stay a company driver and retire with a good income. There is still good money in trucking if you watch what you are doing. Stay away from the video games. They only take your paycheck. Try to enjoy the experience.

Best Advice? This is an actual job, you're not a tourist, and you are not on vacation. You really will have to work, and holding a steering wheel is only a small part of the job. Engage brain at all times...

 

leasing a new truck from transam that is well equipped is better then leasing a truck
from swift or jb hunt and paying for an old worn out piece of crap
Leasing isnt for everyone is ok for me for now
but I am not as smart as the real heroes on here

Never ever, eat beans or other foods that give you gas when it is real hot or real cold outside. You'll have to decide on freezing, sweating or well... suffering...

 

If you posterior end is sensitive. Bring your OWN CHARMIN. Truck stops use generic toilet paper.

Also don't be fooled by the cute sounding women that be trying to find a ride on the radio.

Stay in the right lane and let the Chicken Haulers use the left lane.

Watch out for Good buddies.

Don't feed the lot lizards.

The hot lot lizards are usually under cover cops.

Watch out for Lot lizards who look like women, but are really men.

Always smile for the red light camera's.
