All I can say is that depending on the fleet you drive for, it isn't always as great as some people may think it is. Trust me

Private fleet hauls THEIR OWN goods back and forth. Otherwise, a "for hire" fleet (truckload or LTL carrier) will haul goods for ANY company with the money. From a driver standpoint, at a private carrier, it typically means your always moving the same freight, dealing with the same issues, suppliers, and customers. Often involves more labor on the part of the driver to load, off-load the product.

For the most part private carriers don't touch or have to touch their freight. Some carriers such as DOT Foods might. For the most part carriers like Tyson, JBS, Cargil, Seaboard etc pay a lumper like everybody else.
Private carriers have their advantages and disadvantages, but for the most part they have better benefits then the common carriers they get to haul their product.
Disadvantage is if you are near a plant and they need a driver to pick up a load the next day and there won't be one available. You might have to sit until that load gets ready. But most pay for layover.
Another Advantage is like you said you go to pretty much same customers, and the back hauls may change, but other then that its business as usual.duckdiver Thanks this. -
Generally, notice I did say generally, a driver for a private carrier has a more set schedule and does not spend weeks on the road. The purpose of the private fleet is to get the company's product to their market, not to make money in trucking.
I drove for one, for a while. We had to be back every week, so we could get more potato salad and burritos to our customers. As drivers, we had the same benefits as the people in the plant and comparable pay rates. -
Resers's huh. Love there potato salad. I drive for a meat companies private fleet and we along with the other meat companies have to drive on the road. If the company is small like Reser's, MBM, or Dot Foods. In which you are scheduled out of a certain terminal its back and forth. But For the larger companies who have plants all over the US. You go from plant to plant until your scheduled home time. I think we all know all private fleets are not run the same. So really no need to say in General. I was just speaking of the type of private fleet's that I work for.
