Long stretches of interstate provide plenty of time for the mind to ponder life's great questions. Unfortunately, I waste my time thinking about stuff like company mileage & safety statistics. These are the ballpark figures Ive come up with:
Weekly mileage: about 4,000,000 (from weekly safety message)
Trucks on the road: about 1,250 (13650-14900 less broken down or totaled trucks, plus o/o's)
Drivers on the road: about 2,175 (guess 75% team)
Weekly DOT reportables: about 3 (from safety msg)
Weekly incidents: about 75 (from safety msg)
Average miles/week per truck: about 3,200
Average miles/week per driver: about 1,875
1 in 4 trucks, & 1 in 7 Covenant drivers has been in an incident this month
Covenant mileage & safety stats (estimated)

Double Yellow this is pretty good info. But I think 75% teams is high. I've heard we are around 50% teams. The last quarterly report showed 1500 trucks for Covenant. 1875 miles per driver is too low. The math with lower teams would equate to 2200 miles per driver.

Thanks I didnt think to check the quarterly report (despite anxiously awaiting this quarter's results -- come on $4/share cvti!). And perhaps my team estimate was skewed because the western terminals are disproportionately team... Anyway, here are the revised numbers:
Weekly mileage: about 4,000,000 (from weekly safety message)
Trucks on the road: about 1,500
Drivers on the road: about 2,250
Weekly DOT reportables: about 3 (from safety msg)
Weekly incidents: about 75 (from safety msg)
Average miles/week per truck: about 2,667
Average miles/week per driver: about 1,778
1 in 5 trucks, & 1 in 8 Covenant drivers has been in an incident this month
Mileage still seems low, so here are the numbers assuming each truck takes an average of 7 days hometime in 8 weeks:
Weekly mileage: about 4,000,000 (from weekly safety message)
Trucks on the road: about 1,312 (188 trucks on hometime/week)
Drivers on the road: about 1,968
Weekly DOT reportables: about 3 (from safety msg)
Weekly incidents: about 75 (from safety msg)
Average miles/week per truck: about 3,050
Average miles/week per driver: about 2,033
1 in 4 trucks, & 1 in 7 Covenant drivers has been in an incident this month
Any way you slice it, the incident rate seems awfully high. Wish I knew how it compared to other training companies... -
Remember not all DOT reportables are the carriers fault

I am solo and these are the miles I made this past week - 3633 - which is common. Sometimes I can make a little less... or a little more.... and almost always reset once a week.

I also heard that freight has been pretty good this month and company doesn't want any truck idling/ siting.... Those who don't have a load, should contact their dispatcher and get dispatched.
-
So there must be some folks making only 1000 miles for the averages to come out like that (begging the question: "are they running like that because they have a poor track record, because they're unlucky to be in a slow freight area, or because they haven't been blessed with the load planners/dispatchers that we have?")Last edited: Jul 2, 2012

transportHER Thanks this.

Due to freight being so good, we are to contact our dispatcher if we sit at all. So we do.
