Who has tried these to replace batteries or considering it? Two I'm aware of are from Maxwell and Kold-Ban/KAPower. Prices would seem to be from maybe $900 to $1,800; could make one feel foolish if it was not a good idea! Claims to never having a dead battery are intriguing, life span is supposedly 15-20 years; and less weight is always good. Opinions? Experiences?

I don't see how you could "replace" the batteries with capacitors, since you would still need the long term energy storage.

Capacitors are for short high energy bursts.

Do you have a link to the website?

Need lots of homework! It would be for starting, and need st least 1 battery for radio etc. If did not start first time, its time to call the wrecker service. One quick blast of juice and its done.

You use it in place of just one of the batteries. It is used like a booster. All of Conway's new trucks have them installed in them from the factory. We just replaced one under warranty. Dang things are exspensive. $1100.00 a pop.

    alaga Thanks this.

you could buy a good reduction starter and install two additional batteries for that $1100

Sounds about the same as adding a ramjet to the top of your cab to get you up big hills when fully loaded!!!:yes2557:Seriously what's the point? What does it eliminate or add to the operation of the truck?:biggrin_25520:Maybe I'm just too old fashioned; or did I miss the sarcasm somewhere along the post???:biggrin_25523:

zen - websites are: maxwell.com & koldban.com; read somewhere that short high burst might take some extra precautions when working with these things.

sd - "supposed to" be able to recharge itself from a battery, even if battery is as low as 9 volts, but may take a few minutes (if I understand the idea).

cowc - thanks for that heads-up! yea, I thought yellow-top Optima was expensive!

metric - less weight (for at least one benefit), koldban quoted their 70kJ capacitor for my app was 26 lbs'; advertised to last 15-20 years (they say).

miz - not trying to be sarcastic, just out for info (and I read too much!); hoping to always have a start and eliminate weight of maybe a couple of batteries and their associated reliability issues is my goal. Don't mind spending some $$$ if it is a good product and lessens the need for maintenance.

Cowcatcher do you drive for Conway?
    How well do they work?

I would like to try useing one but would like to here from someone in the real world.

It would pay for its self in a year or so if I could replace three of my four 67 pound batteries with one 27 pound battery, one ultra capacitor 27 pounds one regular battery 67 pounds equals 94 pounds net savings 174 pounds.

I have e-mailed the KBI folks with some questions in addition to the info they have already sent to me. It would seem the capacitor does require some wiring-in over and above what the batteries do. Will keep posting...
