That all amounts to less than 10 cents a mile. You're leaving a lot of money on the table at a $1.50 a mile. Likely you even have to give notice when you want a week or more off - effectively forced dispatched. Finding loads is work but it's not difficult and negotiating isn't either. Did 44,000 miles past 2 quarters at $2.19 on every mile driven, 18% of which were deadhead paying zilch. My rates are climbing every month and I'm passing off loads I can't cover with the phone ringing off the wall at $3+ on 400 mile or better runs. I take great satisfaction in my work, something I never felt at $1.40 doing the same work. Some weeks I work 3 days and clear more money on a 1,000 miles than I did on 4,000 miles at a $1.40. Now if you can establish yourself and get those rates it's far above and beyond anything a company paying low rates can offer up with measly "freebies". I don't give anyone notice when I take off either except my go to brokers the day before and my buddy who will gladly cover what I'd normally haul.

Wow that cheap? I don't have to give notice either for days off I tell them when I run and when I don't very few company's allow that but mine does. Im not sure how it works up here as far as getting set up to cross the border insurance for a us truck can top 10k a yr for a new operation so I've been told,'what does it cost down there? Do you have your own authority or do you run for Landstar?

Edited.. ok I misunderstood your comment and edited. Yes, that cheap.. Companies leasing guys on for flat rates act like they're cutting through complicated red tape and saving you big bucks when reality is it's a few pennies on the mile of extra cost and really not that much hassel to do on your own. As far as crossborder requirements and extra costs I haven't a clue about any of that I'll never be crossing any borders.

A friend of mine has a neighbor who runs on his own but stays in Canada. We don't need "authority" here just a registered company, insurance and plates for the provinces you run and IFTA and your good to go. He has a double drop does jet engines a lot I guess, have seen him with mixed loads also. I have been meaning to chat with him and ask him how he finds his loads what boards are good for Canada only freight. I'd love to just stay up here we have less restrictive hos rules and no border issues would be great.
